LeBron James Comments on His Standing in Cavaliers Organization

Joseph ZuckerJun 4, 2016

Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James might be the unquestioned leader and best player on his team, but the four-time NBA MVP doesn't put himself on a pedestal above his teammates.

During a pregame press conference Saturday ahead of Sunday's NBA Finals Game 2, James discussed his relationship with team owner Dan Gilbert and where he views himself in the Cavs' hierarchy, per ASAP Sports:

"

I think it's been very good. At the end of the day, we have the same goal, and that is to bring a championship to Cleveland. And that's all that matters. I think he's the owner of the team. I'm just one of the players and one of the 15 guys. So I'm one of the lower guys on the totem pole, so I just do my job. I'm just here to work.

ESPN.com's J.A. Adande attended the press conference and shared the room's reaction to James' comments:

On one hand, James is in a protected class above the rest of the Cavaliers roster—even Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving—though his situation isn't any different from numerous past and present stars in the sport. The NBA is a star-driven league, and teams will always cater to their best players.

On the other hand, James would do himself no favors by publicly stating the obvious—that he is one of the most powerful members inside the Cavaliers organization. Now would be an especially awful time to create any sort of rift in the locker room.

Coming back from a 1-0 series deficit and defeating the Golden State Warriors will be difficult enough for Cleveland with everybody on the same page. The last thing the Cavaliers need is off-court drama hindering their pursuit of an NBA title.
