Milwaukee Bucks' New Arena Design Approved by City: Latest Comments, Reaction
Designs for the Milwaukee Bucks' new arena, parking structure and training facility were officially approved by the city of Milwaukee Tuesday via a Common Council vote.
According to Tom Daykin of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the arena and training facility were both approved unanimously, with a 15-0 vote, while the parking structure was approved by a 14-1 margin.
Construction of the arena is set to begin in June, and the new arena is expected to open in time for the 2018-19 NBA season.
Per Daykin, the $524 million project will include $250 million in public funding.
Radio 620 WTMJ provided an artist's rendering of what the new arena will look like upon completion:
The Bucks have played in the BMO Harris Bradley Center since 1988, making it the NBA's third-oldest venue behind the Golden State Warriors' Oracle Arena and New York Knicks' Madison Square Garden.
The team signed a six-year lease with the BMO Harris Bradley Center in 2012, making a 2018 completion date necessary for the new arena.
The Bucks struggled through a difficult 2015-16 season, going just 33-49, but there is reason for optimism with a promising, young roster that boasts the likes of Jabari Parker, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.
Tuesday's approval indicates that the Bucks are in Milwaukee to stay, and the fans may not be far off from having a perennial Eastern Conference contender to go along with the state-of-the-art arena.
