WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Biggest Talking Points Following PPV Event

Donald WoodMay 23, 2016

Sunday's WWE’s Extreme Rules 2016 pay-per-view only featured one title change but was highlighted by the return of former world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins following the main event.

In addition to Rollins' return from a serious knee injury, questions persist about what will be next for AJ Styles, following yet another loss to Roman Reigns, and which Superstars will get involved in the Money in the Bank ladder match in June.

Following a wild Extreme Rules, here are the biggest talking points heading into Raw and beyond.

Seth Rollins Returns

The biggest story coming out of Extreme Rules was the return of Rollins and his attack on Reigns. After dropping the WWE World Heavyweight Championship due to injury, Rollins has a legitimate reason to get the next title shot.

After beating Styles in convincing fashion, Reigns will need a new storyline heading into the Money in the Bank PPV, and Rollins as the No. 1 contender will give him the perfect feud for the summer.

Ideally, the battle between Reigns and Rollins would lead WWE to book Dean Ambrose as the winner of the Money in the Bank briefcase, leading to the Triple Threat match between each of the former members of The Shield.

In the short term, Rollins vs. Reigns will make for an excellent storyline, especially as the involvement of Triple H and the Authority will be inevitable. The WWE product got an instant shot in the arm when Rollins made his anticipated return.

What’s next for Rollins will be the biggest talking point heading into Raw.

What’s Next for AJ Styles?

Many wrestling fans are concerned about Styles' future following another convincing loss to Reigns. Not only was Styles treated terribly by Reigns' no-selling his finishers and chair shots, but The Club was also buried during the main event.

Monday’s Raw will be imperative to the success of Styles and The Club moving forward. Keeping Styles strong following his world title matches is key to not squandering the momentum he's built since joining the main roster, and he needs a marquee storyline to avoid slipping down the card.

Hopefully, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows will begin to turn on Styles, since he lost in the main event at two consecutive PPVs, leading to the naming of a new leader of The Club who will go after Styles in a one-on-one feud.

Whether it’s Finn Balor, Randy Orton or someone else, Styles needs a top-tier program coming out of Extreme Rules to remain relevant to casual wrestling fans. While hardcore members of the WWE Universe know what he’s capable of, casual fans have now seen him lose several times to both Reigns and Chris Jericho.

Which Superstars Will Be Involved in Money in the Bank?

The next PPV on the schedule will be Money in the Bank, which will lead to questions about which Superstars will be involved in the ladder match and who will walk away with the briefcase.

With Rollins and Reigns likely beginning a singles program for the world title, Rollins probably won’t be in the Money in the Bank match. On the other hand, Styles' being left out of the title picture makes him a perfect candidate to throw his hat in the ring.

In addition, wrestlers like Ambrose, Kevin Owens and Cesaro have all worked hard and deserve a spot in the matchup. Add in the possibility of returning Superstars like John Cena, Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton as possible entries, and this could be one of the most anticipated Money in the Bank matches to date.

One of the most intriguing possibilities would be Ambrose stealing the show in June and pulling down the briefcase. While The Lunatic Fringe hasn’t been booked well in recent months, the idea of Rollins vs. Reigns for the world title with Ambrose looming would be a perfect tease for the Triple Threat involving the former members of The Shield.

Saving The Shield Triple Threat for WrestleMania would be ideal, but getting it at SummerSlam would make for an unbelievable main event for the summer spectacular.
