Bills Reportedly Don't Plan To Give Gilmore Big Extension

Friday, June 17

The Bills have "no intention" of giving Gilmore a new contract that would "come close" to the five-year, $75 million deal Josh Norman received from the Washington Redskins this offseason, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News

Carucci added:

"

The Bills, as I understand it, would be willing to put him in the range of about $12.5 million, maybe $13 million, per year. But they aren't going to $15 million. Their cap space doesn't allow it and, with [Tyrod] Taylor likely to be getting a huge payday in the future and second-year corner Ronald Darby headed for a whopping second contract in a couple of seasons, they can't justify the room a Norman-like deal would devour.

"

Gilmore Expected To Report to Bills

Monday, June 13

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported, "Gilmore is expected at minicamp this week after sitting out OTAs mired in contract talks. Won't do much, if anything, though."

Gilmore, Bills Not Close to Agreeing on New Deal

Sunday, June 12

A long-term extension for Gilmore "does not appear imminent," according to Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News.

"Indications I've received are that they haven't made significant headway on a new deal," Dunne added.

Gilmore Has Proved To Be Among Top CB's in NFL

Gilmore, 25, indicated in March that he wants to remain in Buffalo so long as he gets a raise he deems suitable, per Dunne:

"

I definitely would [stay] as long as it's fair. I love Buffalo. They gave me my first opportunity to play in the National Football League. I think we have a lot of great talent, a lot of guys in the locker room that I love like my little brothers. But right now, it’s a business. It’s not personal. You believe in yourself and see if you can meet.

"

Gilmore is currently entering the last year of his rookie deal.

In four seasons since being selected No. 10 overall in the 2012 NFL draft, Gilmore has started 51 games for the Bills. He has nine interceptions, four forced fumbles and 156 tackles in his career, according to NFL.com, which has cemented him as the team's top cornerback.

Given the five-year, $75 million deal Josh Norman received from the Washington Redskins this offseason, Gilmore has some precedence to base his contract demands around. Gilmore may not be on the elite level of Norman, but he is right on the fringe.

Gilmore's rookie deal was for four years and roughly $12 million with a fifth-year option, which the team picked up. The option carries a salary of $11 million, which he is set to make this season.

If Gilmore were to receive a new contract paying $11 million annually, it would make him the eighth-highest-paid cornerback in football, above the Miami Dolphins' Byron Maxwell and below the New York Giants' Janoris Jenkins.

Buffalo has some leverage though, as Ronald Darby started 15 games and was excellent as a rookie in 2015. If Gilmore were to hold out, the Bills would still have at least one stout corner in the secondary.

Staying around the $11 million mark seems fair for a player of Gilmore's status. It makes him among the most valuable cornerbacks in the league while allowing Buffalo to solidify its secondary while not breaking the bank.
