Mauritius Open 2016: Final Leaderboard Scores, Prize Money Payouts

Matt JonesMay 15, 2016

Jeunghun Wang made it two wins in a week on the European Tour, as he capitalised on a late collapse from Siddikur Rahman to win the Mauritius Open on Sunday with a score of six-under par.

Leading by one shot heading into the final day, Rahman was able to pull away from Wang initially and had a three-shot lead with three holes to play. But the man from Bangladesh crumbled under late pressure, allowing the South Korean, who won the Trophee Hassan II just last weekend, to clinch the title with a birdie.

This is the moment he birdied the last to go within touching distance of the win:

Rahman Opens Door for Wang Late On

With a confident Wang in pursuit, this was always going to be a big test of Rahman’s mental strength on the final day. And the 31-year-old kept things together early on at the Four Seasons Golf Club.

As has been the case for much of this tournament, the vast majority of the players found the windy conditions too tough to handle, meaning those who played solid golf would see their position strengthen.

Rahman was able to do exactly that. After dropping a shot at the third, he responded tremendously with back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth, eventually going through the front nine in 35. Here’s a look at the putt that secured the second of those two birdies, per the European Tour Twitter feed:

Meanwhile, Wang was toiling, as two bogeys and a birdie saw him fall three shots back at the turn. Nicolas Colsaerts was also finding the conditions tough to master, with a front nine of 40, which included two double-bogeys, posted.

Still, as the players edged towards the finish line there was still a lot that could potentially change. Indeed, both Wang and Colsaerts made their mark at the par-five 13th with superb approaches from the bunker:

Despite their efforts, with a three-shot lead standing on the 16th tee, Rahman was poised to coast home. However, he found trouble at the 16th, posting a double-bogey and bringing Wang back to within one.

As we can see, even under the pressure of knowing he was right back in the hunt for glory, Wang kept his composure superbly at the 17th:

At the same hole Rahman dropped another shot, meaning things were tied up as the players went down the final fairway. Playing ahead, Wang would have known he could heap the pressure on with a birdie and did exactly that, nailing a superb approach and putt.

Rahman was unable to match that effort, with a par at the last leaving him a shot off. He’ll be left to reflect on a huge opportunity missed to clinch what would have been a maiden triumph on the European Tour. For Wang, finishing a tournament at the top of the standings is becoming a very familiar feeling.
