Flores Off to Slow Start for Mets in 2016
After serving as New York's starting shortstop for much of the 2015 campaign, Flores shifted into a reduced role entering 2016.
The Mets signed Asdrubal Cabrera to be the starter at shortstop, leaving Flores to fill in as the primary backup at all four infield positions.
The Venezuela native is hitting just .180 with one home run and two RBI in 50 at-bats this season on the heels of a year that saw him register a .263 batting average with 16 homers and 59 RBI.
The Mets were widely reported to have nearly traded Flores to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal for outfielder Carlos Gomez last year, but it fell through, and Flores remained on the team, as detailed by CBS Sports' Matt Snyder. The Mets later acquired outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers in a separate transaction.
While Flores' absence had no impact on New York's everyday lineup, it did leave the team without a backup for Cabrera and second baseman Neil Walker.
