Modern-Day Dream Matches 💭

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
WWE has done an admirable job of building a card rife with matches that fans want to see, even if the build behind them left a lot to be desired. Reigns vs. Styles headlines the lineup, but the supporting matches will go a long way in deciding the overall quality of the spectacular.
While there may not be quite the hype for Sunday's event as there was for WrestleMania 32 in April, meaning less coverage of betting odds, Oddschecker.com has all of the favorites.
With that said, here is what you can expect to see Sunday night when Payback hits the WWE Network airwaves at 7 p.m. ET, beginning with the Kickoff.
| WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match: Roman Reigns (1/3) vs. AJ Styles (2) | |
| WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Cesaro (15/8) vs. The Miz (4/11) | |
| WWE United States Championship Match: Kalisto (4/9) vs. Ryback (8/5) | |
| WWE Woman's Championship Match: Natalya (9/4) vs. Charlotte (3/10) | |
| Dean Ambrose (1/9) vs. Chris Jericho (9/2) | |
| Sami Zayn (7/4) vs. Kevin Owens (2/5) | |
| Dolph Ziggler (10/11) vs. Baron Corbin (4/5) | |
| No. 1 Contender's Tag Team Match: Enzo Amore & Colin Cassady (8/11) vs. The Vaudevillains (1) |
The buildup to WWE's Payback has had its extraordinary highs, including the debuts of fresh faces from NXT and the drama surrounding the main event. Relive these top moments that helped shape what may well be, at least thus far, WWE's best card of 2016.
The Phenomenal No. 1 Contender
Just 24 hours removed from a disappointing defeat at WrestleMania 32, courtesy of Chris Jericho, AJ Styles entered a Fatal 4-Way No. 1 Contender's match against Y2J, former Intercontinental champion Kevin Owens and the returning Cesaro, hoping to regain momentum and earn a shot at Roman Reigns' WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
He did just that, delivering the Styles Clash to the brash, arrogant Jericho. Not only did he avenge his loss from the previous night, but he catapulted himself to the top of the card, setting up a main event run few could ever have expected this early in his run with the company.
The emotional aftermath of the victory was captured by WWE cameras after the broadcast went off the air and served as evidence of just how much the moment meant for a wrestler who had plied his craft all over the world and was on his way to the greatest push of his career in the most storied company in the sport.
An Anything-but-SAWFT Debut
The night after WrestleMania 32 brought with it a number of debuts, but none had the impact of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady's. The charismatic duo from NXT electrified the fans and, in the process, laid the verbal smackdown on The Dudley Boyz en route to the best debut of 2016 so far.
In the weeks that followed, the Certified G and Big Cass have taken the tag team division by storm, knocking off fellow NXT alumni The Ascension before shutting Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley up in the semifinal round of the WWE Tag Team Championships No. 1 Contenders' Tournament.
A legion of fans, eager to spout the team's catchphrases along with them, will turn their attention to Payback, where Enzo and Cass will battle former NXT tag champions The Vaudevillains, who have also torn through stiff competition to make it to the final.
Only time will tell whether the wildly popular babyfaces earn themselves a date with The New Day for WWE tag team gold, but one thing is for certain: They are incredibly over.
And you can't...teach...that.
The Club Has Arrived
The April 11 episode of Raw will go down in history as the night Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, formerly of New Japan Pro Wrestling and The Bullet Club, made their debuts and instantly injected WWE programming with a sense of excitement and unpredictability.
The duo attacked Jimmy and Jey Uso, leaving the former tag team champions in a heap after a vicious assault.
The beatdown not only signaled the arrival of the world-renowned duo, but it also served notice to the WWE locker room that no one was safe from their wrath.
Least of all WWE world heavyweight champion Reigns, who would experience firsthand the pain and punishment Anderson and Gallows are capable of a week later in London, where he found himself laid out following a two-on-one beatdown.
Muddying the waters is the fact No. 1 contender Styles has history with the team, whom he considered close friends during his own days with Bullet Club. Their past, along with the beatings dealt to Reigns and The Usos, have created suspicions among fans that Styles, Anderson and Gallows may be in collusion ahead of Payback.
Cesaro, No. 1 Contender to the Intercontinental Championship
The April 11 Raw was also notable for the crowning of a new contender to The Miz's Intercontinental Championship.
Just one week after making a return from injury, Cesaro defeated Kevin Owens to earn a shot at the Hollywood A-lister's coveted title.
Since that monumental victory, Cesaro has traded barbs with Miz while consistently reminding fans of his greatness between the ropes.
Sunday night, he could earn even more support by using his vaunted uppercuts to shut Miz up and earn a run with a title that has eluded him thus far in his WWE career.
A Flair for Interference
Natalya stood for all of her fellow female Superstars when she berated Charlotte for her complete and utter lack of respect for her peers on the April 4 episode of Raw. It was a moment that not only established the Queen of Harts as the elder stateswoman of WWE but also the latest threat to the second-generation champion's title.
One week after her stand against all things Flair, Natalya had the opportunity to wrest the women's title away from Charlotte, and she was well on her way. Late in the match, she trapped the titleholder in the Sharpshooter, only for Ric Flair to pull the official out of the ring, causing a disqualification and negating Charlotte's tap out.
It was another controversial conclusion to a match involving the women's champion, one that served as the emphasis for a rematch at Payback.
This time, though, Natalya's uncle Bret Hart will be at ringside to prevent The Nature Boy from interjecting himself in his daughter's affairs.
