Texas A&M Football 2016 NFL Draft Tracker, Analysis and Results

Sean FryeApr 26, 2016

The Texas A&M Aggies will likely have at least a second-round pick in tackle Germain Ifedi, but the NFL draft pool from College Station dips off from there.

One interesting candidate to watch will be punter Drew Kaser, who could go undrafted or as high as early in the third day.

Stay plugged into this piece to track each and every Texas A&M player selected to play on Sundays, as well as who their replacements will be on the 2016 Aggies squad.

Note: All draft projections are based on Matt Miller's NFL Draft 400 series unless otherwise noted.

Germain Ifedi, OT

1 of 4

Drafted: First round, 31st overall, Seattle Seahawks

Height: 6'6"

Weight: 324 lbs

Analysis

With Texas A&M being the former home of Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews and Cedric Ogbuehi, Ifedi definitely has some big shoes to fill when it comes to Day 1 expectations on Sundays. A massive frame yet not too overweight, Ifedi has both the power and mobility to move along the line and keep defenders from reaching the next level. Ifedi isn't as polished as his predecessors, but, nevertheless, he has plenty of upside.

Ifedi was the very last pick of the first round of the draft to the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle allowed the sixth-most sacks in the league last year at 46, a mark that tied the Kansas City Chiefs. Since free agency began, the Seahawks have signed three offensive linemen, so expect Ifedi to have plenty of people to compete with for an early starting gig.

Replacement

Keaton Sutherland, a sophomore guard who made spot starts last year, could move to tackle and replace Ifedi along a line that returns just two starters. The front-line depth for the Aggies is an area of concern, but Texas A&M is hoping new offensive line coordinator Jim Turner, who coached previously under Mike Sherman, can continue building NFL-caliber linemen.

Drew Kaser, P

2 of 4

Drafted:  Sixth Round, 4th pick, San Diego Chargers

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 212 lbs

Analysis

Ranked as the best punter available in this year's class, per Matt Miller, Kaser could very well find himself selected in the third or fourth round by a team looking for a bargain deal on an elite punter. Kaser has a booming leg, averaging 47.4 yards per punt at Texas A&M. If he can learn to be a more situational punter instead of just booting it as far as he can, he'll land a starting gig somewhere.

In the sixth round on Saturday, the Chargers drafted Kaser. San Diego was dead last in the league last season with just 13 punts inside the 20-yard line, so Kaser actually fills a valued need for the Chargers.

 Replacement:

Junior punter Shane Tripucka is the only punter listed on Texas A&M's spring roster, so it's almost without question that he'll be the one to replace Kaser. It's unlikely that anybody in the country can adequately replace Kaser's leg, but with A&M's high-powered offense, Kaser was always a luxury compared to a necessity.

Brandon Williams, CB

3 of 4

Drafted: Third round, 29th pick, Arizona Cardinals.

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 197 lbs

Analysis

Williams brings a unique, athletic skill set to the next level, as he was originally recruited as a running back before moving to the Aggies' secondary. He has exceptional speed and athleticism that any team will be willing to take a chance on in the later rounds. His biggest knock is his continued learning curve, but Williams could find a niche role as a returner as he continues to develop on the defensive side of the ball.

With Arizona picking Williams so early, that plays out well for former Aggie. Expected to be an early contributor on special teams, organizations will generally let third round picks have a year or two to develop. That should allow Williams' athleticism to polish up on Sundays.

Replacement

The secondary is always a concern in College Station, but the Aggies do have some talent there despite a thinning of the herd. Donovan Wilson had five picks last year, and rising senior Alex Sezer could see his role increased.

Tra Carson, RB

4 of 4

UNDRAFTED

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 227 lbs

Analysis

A power-runner by trade, Carson could be a cheap pickup for a team looking to add a third-and-short back to complement their primary ball-carrier. Carson lacks the next-level speed to beat defenders around the edge, but he buries his nose into lines and can eek out the needed inches in the short game.

Replacement

Carson was the first 1,000-yard rusher under Kevin Sumlin, so the Aggies undoubtedly have some big shoes to fill. Transfer Keith Ford out of Oklahoma, although he rushed for 500 yards in two years in Norman, will be expected to be the primary back.
