Robert Griffin III Comments on Hue Jackson, QB Competition, More

Joe PantornoApr 6, 2016

Robert Griffin III has gotten his second chance in the NFL, this time with the Cleveland Browns after signing with the organization toward the end of March.

On Wednesday, the former Washington Redskins quarterback spoke with the media in Cleveland as he discussed his new setting and coaches and his chances of hitting the field in 2016.

After dealing with injuries over the past three seasons while being benched for all of 2015 in favor of Kirk Cousins in Washington, Griffin made it clear how thankful he was for Cleveland's new head coach, Hue Jackson, giving him another shot, per the Browns:

When healthy, Griffin has proved he can be a dangerous offensive weapon. He won the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award after passing for 3,200 yards and rushing for another 815 with a combined 27 touchdowns in 2012.

He's paired athleticism with a powerful arm, something he might have to rely on after having suffered knee and ankle injuries. The NFL showed just what he's capable of:

History aside, Griffin isn't guaranteed the starting job, as he'll have to compete with veteran Josh McCown, who went 1-7 in eight starts with the Browns last season, his first with the team.

The Browns relayed Griffin's thoughts on competing for the job with the 13-year veteran:

Considering Griffin sat for a year and doesn't have the starting job guaranteed even though his counterpart, McCown, holds a career 18-39 record, there could have been doubts about RG3's confidence moving forward. He was quick to dispel any doubters, per Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official website:

Griffin is now a part of a team that's seen little success at the quarterback position. Cleveland's had 24 different starters since 1999, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith, and Griffin could be tasked with trying to turn around the organization.

The Browns have had just two winning seasons in the past 17 years and have made the playoffs once, which was back in 2002. While Griffin might be burdened with a savior-like role if he wins the starting job, the pressure seems like it won't affect him, per the Browns:

Had someone presented a Griffin-Browns partnership to NFL fans outside of Cleveland after the 2012 season, they might have laughed at the idea. But Griffin's swift fall from grace in Washington might just create a comeback story for the ages.

If he is able to resurrect his career and in the process help improve the Browns organization, then Griffin will be the next folk hero in Ohio.
