WrestleMania 2017: Dream Matches Fans Want to See at Next Year's PPV

Alfred KonuwaApr 3, 2016

After a scintillating WrestleMania, it's never to early to predict who could be in line for a dream match on next year's card.

From the old school, to the new school to the future, the various call-ups, comebacks and evolutions over the next year will set the stage for an even more exciting WrestleMania in 2017.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Roman Reigns

One of the major stories of WrestleMania weekend was the triumph of Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: Dallas on Friday. A faint "Nakamura" chant could be heard during Sunday's main event, which featured Roman Reigns.

Nakamura's star power is undeniable and will translate no matter where he goes. With just a look, a smirk or a gesture, Nakamura can control the emotion of an entire building.

The hardcore WWE fans who despise Reigns will get behind Nakamura in a huge way, and Reigns—someone many believe to be a favorite of the WWE front office—will make a perfect foil for the international star.

In addition to a great story, Nakamura would be the best opponent Reigns has faced, and their combination of physicality and athleticism could combine to give the world one of the best wrestling matches it has ever seen.

Undertaker vs. John Cena

After a victory over Shane McMahon, Undertaker's WrestleMania career lives on. This was rumored to be happening this year. John Cena himself even provided a tease about the match on social media (h/t PWMania.com). And as prolific as Undertaker's WrestleMania career has been, it would feel incomplete without John Cena as an opponent. Taker's list of WrestleMania foes reads like a WWE Hall of Fame who's who, and if Cena is never part of that list, it would just seem wrong.

There would be a lot of money in putting a career-ending stipulation on the line, mainly for Undertaker. Fans still don't like seeing Undertaker lose at WrestleMania. The idea of Cena retiring the greatest WrestleMania performer of all time would be enough to inject all the emotional investment WWE needs and then some.

There's also a lot of novelty in a match between the present-day John Cena and The Undertaker. For the majority of Cena's prime, the two have been kept apart. During the brand split, Cena anchored Raw while The Undertaker was one of the faces of SmackDown.

Even after the days of the roster split, fans were deprived of a proper, long-term Cena-Undertaker feud. The window is quickly closing. It's now or never.

Seth Rollins vs. AJ Styles

Every WrestleMania needs a smark match, whether it's Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage, CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho or any match featuring Daniel Bryan.

Styles and Seth Rollins could combine for an athletic showcase that will hearken back to the prime years of ROH. Not only would the storyline pop (a new-school Rollins vs. Styles in winter, with Rollins looking to put away Styles for good), there is no end to the potential of a Styles-Rollins in-ring contest.

With Styles turning 40 in 2017, it's fair to question how much time he has left in WWE. The promotion needs to be mindful of this and ensure every opponent he is matched up against is an elite performer who could benefit from a great match with Styles.

Bill Goldberg vs. Ryback

Sure, Ryback lost at WrestleMania, but he always seems to find a landing spot this time of year. Goldberg and WWE's relationship isn't the most pleasant. Goldberg has voiced his dislike for Triple H in the past, per Wrestling Inc., so there's more of a chance he never sets foot in a WWE ring again than that he does.

But if Goldberg were to have one more match, who better than the man to whom he is consistently compared. Ryback's switch from a singlet to black trunks seemed to be a not-so-subtle taunt toward the former WCW star. And the built-in storyline of old Goldberg vs. new Goldberg would make it easier for fans to side with the returning legend.

Bayley vs. Sasha Banks

There may be no two performers in all of WWE who have better chemistry, and a more intriguing history, than Sasha Banks and Bayley. After losing the NXT Women's Championship on Friday, it's only a matter of time before Bayley arrives on the main roster. When she does, it will be perfect timing.

The women's division is firing on all cylinders, and when Bayley joins in on the rising momentum, it will be a complete, competitive division.

WWE will not be able to resist the temptation of recapturing the magic of the Banks-Bayley rivalry. Their match at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn was the stuff of legend. The only way these two women have a chance of topping that instant classic is with a high-profile showdown on the grandest stage of them all.
