Victor Oladipo Injury: Updates on Magic Guard's Concussion and Recovery

Mike ChiariApr 9, 2016

Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo had his season cut short when he suffered his second concussion of the year after Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat elbowed him on April 8.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel noted that Oladipo would not be available against Charlotte on Wednesday.

"No, I think I'll be all right. I think I'll be fine," Oladipo said when asked if he was concerned about suffering another concussion, per Robbins.

Oladipo Vital to Magic's Long-Term Success

The 23-year-old Indiana alum is in the midst of his third NBA season, and although his numbers are down slightly from a 2014-15 campaign that saw him put up nearly 18 points per game, Oladipo is still excelling to the tune of 16 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.

Oladipo is among the top performers on a team that is stacked with young talent and is seemingly ready to become a factor in the Eastern Conference in the very near future.

The Silver Spring, Maryland, native has offered glimpses of the type of player he could ultimately be with some big showings, such as a 45-point outing against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 18.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, that output placed Oladipo in some elite company in the annals of Magic history:

Following that fantastic game, Oladipo described the manner in which he had altered his approach over the course of the season, per NBA.com's John Denton:

"

I changed my mindset to, "Every shot is going in." It's just belief. I'm working so hard and I work hard all of the time. So to go out there and second guess myself, there's no need to work hard, then. So I just go out there and let it fly and have fun. When you have fun that's when you are at your best and that's what I try to do every game.

"

That change in philosophy seemed to be a good omen for the Magic down the stretch, but Oladipo suffered a wrist injury that forced him to miss some time shortly thereafter.

Oladipo has been fairly durable over the course of his career, missing just 12 combined games in his first two seasons, but the ailments appear to be mounting late in his third campaign.

Although the Magic have been eliminated from the playoff hunt, the final games of the season are important for the continued growth of younger players.

With Oladipo unable to return this season, look for Evan Fournier and Elfrid Payton to benefit the most from increased playing time, while reserves such as Brandon Jennings and Mario Hezonja will likely be asked to take on a greater role as well.
