Charleston Rambo to Oklahoma: Sooners Land 4-Star WR Prospect

Joseph ZuckerMar 27, 2016

Oklahoma upgraded its receiving corps for the 2017 season, securing the commitment of wide receiver Charleston Rambo on Sunday:

According to 247Sports' composite ranking, Rambo is the No. 22 wideout and No. 163 player overall in the 2017 recruiting class. He's also ranked 23rd in the state of Texas. His commitment comes a week after Rambo visited Notre Dame, per Irish Sports Daily.

The Cedar Hill, Texas, native caught 22 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, per 247Sports. He was a terror in the open field for opposing defenses:

Rambo is adept at getting separation from the defender. 247Sports' EJ Holland shared a clip of him matched up with Kobe Boyce, another 2017 recruit. Rambo creates some space for himself with his cut, and a better-timed pass would've had him free down the sideline:

SoonerScoop.com's Eddie Radosevich highlighted not only Rambo's impressive route running but also his ability to sidestep would-be tacklers:

Considering where he stands in relation to others in his class, Rambo could be one of the top sleepers among Oklahoma's top recruits.

There's no question he'll need to add some weight once he hits college. According to 247Sports, he weighs just 165 pounds, which is stretched over his 6'2" frame. Until he becomes stronger, Rambo's role in the Sooners offense will be somewhat limited. He'll add little to no value as a blocker.

In the right scheme, though, he could become a dangerous playmaker. He has the speed, athleticism and intelligence to excel at the next level. It's not often one sees a receiver with that combination of skills, and Rambo's on-field IQ allows him to make the most of his physical gifts.

He knows how to exploit any gaps in the secondary in zone coverage, and that allows him to get that separation he turns into big gains. It's also the kind of trait some receivers are unable to learn even with the best coaching at their disposal.

Rambo will likely need a year of adjustment in the FBS before he starts hitting his stride. Come 2018, he should be poised to emerge as one of head coach Bob Stoops' most dynamic offensive weapons.
