Martinez Problems Come at Busy Time for Bayern
The 27-year-old star tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee at the start of the 2014-15 campaign, an injury that kept him on the sidelines for the better part of the season. He didn't play a full 90 minutes for the Bavarians until October of last year, per WhoScored.com.
For Bayern, the news he's now set for another spell on the sidelines couldn't have come at a worse time. Per sports writer Pete O'Rourke, Germany international Jerome Boateng is also set to miss some time, and as things stand, Holger Badstuber is the only healthy centre-back in the squad, per DW Sports.
Bayern will meet Juventus in the Champions League round of 16, and while the Bundesliga giants are favourites going into the tie, injuries to key players could take their toll. Juventus may have started the season in poor form, but the Italians are on a 12-match winning streak in Serie A, per Squawka.
But while this injury is bad news for Bayern, it's worse for Martinez. The former Athletic Bilbao star was finally enjoying regular football again, and after rehabilitating his knee for the better part of a year, he appeared to have put his problems behind him.
