WWE Royal Rumble 2016 Results: Re-Booking Full Card from PPV

Aaron BowerJan 26, 2016

WWE's first show of 2016 has widely been regarded as a success, with Royal Rumble attracting plenty of plaudits for the overall booking of the show.

But there are always things that could have been done better, especially with a 30-man Royal Rumble bout where so much is going on.

It's tough to re-book a show that has been so impressive on the whole, but we're going to attempt to do it here, with Sunday's show revisited and re-booked.

Here's how things could have been done a little differently at Sunday's Royal Rumble, with the sole exception of the opening match of the night, Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens.

That match was as strong as it could have been, and the right outcome was reached.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto

1 of 4

This was a decent enough match, but WWE spoiled what should have been a big moment for Kalisto by having him win the belt briefly on Raw a few weeks ago.

In a perfect world, this would have been his first success over Alberto Del Rio, but what else could have been done in the match itself?

There's no issue with the result, as Kalisto and the U.S. Championship are ready for a lengthy run together.

But we'd obviously try and eliminate what were a significant number of botches where possible, and in booking the match, Creative could have been a little less ambitious.

Sure, Kalisto is one heck of a performer and really does some impressive stuff, but the Salida Del Sol, for example, would have been better served in being attempted only once, right at the very end.

In having him go for it a number of times, it cheapened the attractiveness and uniqueness of it. Here's hoping WWE isn't trying to overkill that move after it was unveiled at Tables, Ladders and Chairs by Kalisto for the first time.

The New Day vs. the Usos

2 of 4

Again, there's really no issue with the result here, but we can always polish certain parts of the match to make it all the more enjoyable.

This was a great effort from all four men involved, but WWE opted to bring Xavier Woods into the fray again to get some cheap shots on The Usos.

That may not have been completely necessary. Sure, Woods has to enhance The New Day's status as a major heel stable, but constant interferences don't really do the standing of the group any good.

It's a relief to see that the match ended in spectacular fashion, though. Big E catching one of The Usos midair and hitting him with the Big Ending was a good, solid finish.

Water down the interferences from Woods, and you're not far off a solid match here.

Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

3 of 4

There's one overwhelming element of this match that needs eliminating on the spot if we're re-booking it, and that's the bizarre scene where Ric Flair kissed Becky Lynch.

It's all well and good having Flair cause a distraction, but in kissing her and creating a noteworthy moment, it almost overshadowed everything else that happened in the bout.

All Lynch's good work felt secondary to what happened with her and Flair, and to make matters worse, there's the ending.

Screw Lynch by all means, but then why have Sasha Banks come out and attack her for no reason? Lynch could have simply rolled out of the ring and let Banks and Charlotte have their moment, and it wouldn't have impacted on The Lass Kicker at all.

She could have teased an alliance with Charlotte without doing what she did to Lynch. That made her look unnecessarily weak, especially after she'd just lost the match.

Royal Rumble Match

4 of 4

First of all, in the interest of not getting in over our head here, we're not going to argue with the outcome of Triple H winning the Royal Rumble match.

Why? It means you'd have to change so many aspects of the main event itself, and what was good was that the closing stages set up so many potential WrestleMania feuds.

So we'll address a few smaller elephants in the room. First of all, WWE's production crew would be ready and waiting to capture a couple of significant moments they missed, such as AJ Styles emerging from behind the curtain for the first time rather than simply focusing on Roman Reigns' reaction.

Also, Kofi Kingston was eliminated from the match by Chris Jericho, another spot the production team missed.

Elsewhere, one big issue I'd re-book would be Sami Zayn's involvement in the match. He got his revenge on Kevin Owens by eliminating him, but, sadly, there was little else for him to do.

He was eventually overpowered by most of The Wyatt Family before being quietly eliminated, and that didn't feel right.

Instead, WWE could have thrown someone like Baron Corbin into the Rumble, or even Finn Balor. That would have given Zayn some storyline depth to work with after eliminating Owens.

And was it really worth Reigns being out of the match for so long, only to come back at the end unharmed and charge his way through most of the guys left? That hardly helped his already faltering relationship with WWE fans.
