The two sides now move to the Basin Reserve, the only sports ground to be included on New Zealand's National Heritage list, per ESPN Cricinfo.

New Zealand's busy schedule is starting to take a toll.

After a three-Test tour of Australia at the end of 2015, the Kiwis returned home to host Sri Lanka in two Tests, five one-day internationals and a pair of Twenty20 fixtures.

Now Pakistan have arrived for a short limited-overs trip, providing a nice little appetiser ahead of New Zealand's main course—they round out their home summer by taking on Australia in three one-dayers and two Tests.

But with the ICC World Twenty20 tournament also coming up in March, New Zealand's management team understand the need to take care of their players.

Seamer Tim Southee is already out with a foot injury, while batsman Ross Taylor is now sidelined after having to retire hurt in the third T20 against Pakistan due to a side strain.

Brendon McCullum is currently out of action, too, although the experienced batsman is set to return from a back injury for the third and final one-dayer against Pakistan on Jan. 31.

Todd Latham is in New Zealand's squad for the first two matches before making way for McCullum, who will bow out of international cricket after the Chappell-Hadlee Test series against Australia in February.

Luke Ronchi will keep wicket in Wellington, with BJ Watling then taking over behind the stumps for the second and third one-day fixtures. Per Andrew Fernando of ESPN Cricinfo, coach Mike Hesson said of the switch: "We've talked about the importance of creating depth in all positions and bringing BJ into the side for the second and third ODI will give him some time against the white ball."

Pakistan, meanwhile, should be fresh at the start of the series. However, they have issues over their form in the 50-over format.

Pakistani cricket one-day captain Azhar Ali leaves after submitting his resignation in Lahore on December 29, 2015. Pakistan's cricket chief on December 29 said he had refused to accept one-day captain Azhar Ali's resignation over the widely-tipped select

They suffered a 3-1 series defeat against England in the United Arab Emirates, while they have been beaten in their last three ODI games against the Black Caps on New Zealand soil.

Historically they have a good record at the Basin Reserve, winning three out of four. However, the last meeting between the teams at the venue was way back in 1995.

On that occasion Pakistan's bowling attack included the pace pairing of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, as well as leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. How the tourists must wish they could have just one of that trio available these days.

Mohammad Amir could provide an attacking option with the ball.

The left-arm paceman made his comeback to international cricket in the T20 series against the Kiwis, having served a lengthy ban for conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments in return for deliberately bowling no-balls against England in a Test in June 2010.

He was not welcomed back with open arms by all of his team-mates, though.

ODI captain Azhar Ali offered to quit his role after learning Amir had been picked for a training camp, only for his resignation to be rejected by the Pakistan Cricket Board, per Umar Farooq of ESPN Cricinfo.

Azhar now needs to focus his attention on scoring runs—Pakistan struggled with the bat in the series against England, but even a depleted Kiwi squad will be a tall order for the tourists.

Key Players

New Zealand

Luke Ronchi is only playing one game in the series. He needs to make the most of his solitary opportunity, considering he has struggled for form with the bat.

The 34-year-old has made a top score of 37 not out in his 10 ODI knocks since the Cricket World Cup final against Australia in March 2015. A few runs would be timely before he takes a break, particularly as his absence offers the chance for Watling to impress with both bat and gloves.

Pakistan

Like his captain Azhar, Mohammad Hafeez took a stand against Amir's presence at Pakistan's training camp. He returned to duty only after a meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan.

Now the national team needs Hafeez to make a stand in the middle. He averages 36 in New Zealand in one-day cricket, although the last time he played in Wellington (albeit at the Westpac Stadium), he registered a five-ball duck.
