BDO World Darts Championship 2016: Scores and Results from Saturday
The 2016 BDO World Darts Championship kicked off on Saturday and immediately produced a couple of upsets, as Tony O'Shea suffered a first-round whitewash defeat at the hands of Jim Williams in the first match of the day.
Anca Zijlstra then eliminated three-time Lakeside champion Anastasia Dobromyslova during the evening session, capping off a wild first day of competition.
Elsewhere, Lisa Ashton predictably cruised to a 2-0 win over Paula Jacklin, Craig Caldwell beat Alan Soutar 3-1, and Dennis Harbour survived a marathon match against Darryl Fitton.

Recap
Dobromyslova came into the 2016 BDO World Championship as one of the favourites in the women's tournament, but after a sloppy performance against Zijlstra of the Netherlands, she was forced to pack her bags after falling at the first hurdle.
Tungsten Tales was shocked:
Zijlstra played a superb match, taking out 95 to grab a lead in the first leg, before coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the decider to force a sudden death scenario. The final leg turned into an absolute thriller, with both missing seven match darts, before Zijlstra finally completed the upset.
Dobromyslova will probably have nightmares of this match for weeks to come, as the Russian star missed no less than 18 match darts.

Other results in the evening session saw Jeff Smith cruise past debutant Matthew Medhurst, winning in a whitewash, and Glenn Durant book an easy win over Dean Reynolds, stealing the show with a 12-darter in the first set.
Earlier in the day, the first match of the 2016 Lakeside championships immediately produced its first upset, as Williams, a 31-year-old playing in just his second match in the prestigious tournament, knocked out veteran O'Shea.
Silverback lost the final at Lakeside in 2012 and 2013 and has struggled tremendously since then, losing in the first round for three consecutive years.
SportsPage180 believes this may be the end of the road for the 54-year-old:
"Tony O'Shea with another R1 defeat at Lakeside - I fear his best days are well and truly behind him. Big shame, he's such a legend too.

Williams made the difference on the doubles, looking far more composed every time he stepped up to the board to check out. Both players struggled with their averages, which was a recurring theme throughout the afternoon.
In the women's draw, Jacklin always seems to stand out in a crowd, and she did little to hide herself for her match against Ashton, as shared by this fan:
Ashton won the title in 2014 and 2015 and looks to be in strong form once again as she easily blew by Jacklin in Round 1. With Dobromyslova already out of the tournament, the road to another title seems clear.
Also on Saturday, Club player Harbour beat Fitton in a thrilling match, needing a sudden-death leg in the final set to knock off the Dazzler. Fitton had a nightmare on the doubles and ended up missing six match darts, allowing Harbour to step in and steal the match from under his nose.
This fan couldn't believe she got to witness such a great match on the first day of competition:
In the other afternoon clash, Caldwell gave up just a single set in his preliminary-round win over Soutar.
