Copa Del Rey 2015: Results, Reaction from Wednesday's Round of 32 Leg 2 Matches

Rory MarsdenDec 16, 2015

Gary Neville claimed his first win as Valencia manager on Wednesday as Los Che registered a routine 2-0 home victory against Barakaldo to reach the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

Malaga were dumped out of the competition by Segunda outfit Mirandes as they lost 1-0 at home, while Athletic Bilbao crushed Segunda B's Linense 6-0.

Eibar produced an impressive performance to down Ponferradina 4-0 and overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit, Rayo Vallecano knocked out La Liga fellows Getafe on away goals, and Real Sociedad's campaign came to an end as they drew 1-1 with Las Palmas

Wednesday Recap

Santi Mina opened the scoring for Valencia eight minutes in as he headed home after following up on Pablo Piatti's parried shot.

It was the perfect start for Neville's side at the Mestalla, the hosts having headed into Wednesday's second leg with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate lead.

Alvaro Negredo made it 2-0 just after the half hour in his first start for some time, per bet365:

Unlike the first leg, Barakaldo looked incapable of threatening Valencia, and the hosts saw out the victory with ease.

Malaga currently lie only goal-difference off the relegation zone in La Liga, and their misery was compounded on Wednesday as they failed to turn around their 2-1 defeat to Mirandes from the first leg.

The match at La Rosaleda Stadium was locked at 0-0 for much of the game before the visitors confirmed their place in the next round in the 73rd minute after a goal from Ivorian Lago Junior.

Eibar were under huge pressure coming into Wednesday's match having been humbled by Segunda's Ponferradina in the first leg.

However, the top-flight outfit were up to the task at home. The match was heading for a goalless first half before Borja struck just before the break.

Second-half strikes from Sergi Enrich, Simone Verdi and a dramatic late penalty from Mikel Arruabarrena then completed the comeback for Eibar.

Rayo looked to be on the end of a miraculous comeback from Getafe as they went 3-0 down inside 31 minutes, but a crucial second-half strike from Lass Bangoura gave them the result they needed to win the tie.

Rayo boss Paco Jemez was not happy with the performance, however, per Spanish outlet AS:

"

I’m not happy. It wasn’t a good game; I didn’t like it at all. We’re a team who concede goals so easily, it’s not right for a first division side. In the first half Getafe scored three because they shot three times, if they’d shot six times they’d have scored six. We need to talk and find solutions. While we have these lapses we can’t compete in this category. The mere fact we went through isn't not good enough for me.

We need to look for solutions and its not just a question of the players. We’re at a point where we need to change the dynamic.

"

Meanwhile, Las Palmas edged the all-La Liga tie against La Real by taking advantage of their 2-1 lead from the opening leg.

Willian Jose netted the opener for the visitors eight minutes before half-time, and although La Real responded through a Sergio Canales screamer after the break, they could not claim the result they needed to stay alive in the Copa.

Athletic had no such trouble against Linense as Oscar de Marcos, Javier Eraso and Xabier Etxeita made it 3-0 before the hour mark—5-0 on aggregate.

They then netted three more times in the last 30 minutes—Kike Sola, Raul Garcia and Mikel Rico all getting on the scoresheet—to round off a thoroughly comfortable night for the hosts at the San Mames Stadium.
