Will Muschamp has returned to head coaching after a one-year stint as Auburn's defensive coordinator, taking over as the head coach at South Carolina, the program confirmed Sunday:

The program shared Muschamp's first comments as head coach from the airport when he flew in to take the job on Sunday:

On Monday, David Caraviello of the Post and Courier reported, "Muschamp [is] to be paid $3 million annually in five-year deal." Andy Shain of the State also reported Muschamp will receive a suite at Williams-Brice Stadium, 12 away-game tickets, 24 bowl tickets, a $2 million life insurance policy and two cars in addition to memberships to country and dining clubs.

Muschamp also spoke to the media and was asked about his sideline behavior, saying he and the athletic director "have talked extensively about his expectations for the coach."

Muschamp will have big shoes to fill, replacing legendary coach Steve Spurrier, who resigned in October after going 86–49 in 11 seasons at South Carolina. Muschamp had his struggles during his four years at Florida from 2011 to 2014, leading the Gators to a 28–21 record, including a disappointing 17–15 in the SEC.

That has many wary of his hire at South Carolina, including Dan Wolken of USA Today:

Barrett Sallee of Bleacher Report also has his reservations:

Muschamp's experience extends beyond his shaky time at Florida and his one season with Auburn this past year, however. He was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at LSU from 2001 to 2004, an assistant head coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2005, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Auburn from 2006 to 2007 and a defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas from 2008 to 2010.

That experience with several prominent programs is appealing, as is his familiarity with the SEC. And Muschamp did lead the Gators to the Sugar Bowl in 2012, so his time at Florida wasn't all disappointing. However, he'll have a tall task turning around a South Carolina program that has gone 10-15 in its last two seasons and has won the SEC East title just once in the past 24 years.
