Liverpool Transfer News: Xabi Alonso Comments on Future Amid Return Rumours

Rob BlanchetteDec 1, 2015

Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has said he is "very comfortable" in Bavaria, but he has not ruled out a possible return to Liverpool as his contract expires at the end of the season.

The former Spain international, who represented the Anfield giants for five years, told Goal.com's Andreas Koenigl he is relaxed about his current situation with the Bundesliga champions as he completes his second year at the club.

"At the moment I am focused on the season and Bayern," Alonso told Koenigl, but when questioned about a transfer back to Merseyside, he said, "I don't know what is going to happen in [the] future but hopefully I will know soon. My family and I are feeling very comfortable in Munich and we are happy here."

Alonso signed for Liverpool in 2004 after leaving Real Sociedad, and he progressively became one of Europe's best midfielders, starring for club and country.

The player won the Champions League and the FA Cup with the Reds, and he completed his trophy haul with World Cup and European Championship victories with Spain.

Italian website Tuttomercato (h/t Goal.com) recently said manager Jurgen Klopp is considering an approach to tempt the player to move in a transfer that would be hugely popular among Liverpool supporters.

The club recently wished the player well for his birthday, describing him as a "legend" in their message, per Liverpool's official Twitter account:

Alonso was pivotal for Bayern last year after a shock move from Real Madrid, featuring 36 times in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, according to WhoScored.com.

The midfielder has continued to represent his team this season, but his age—and the arrival of Arturo Vidal—could see him surplus to requirements.

Liverpool are in need of experienced additions as Klopp moulds his new side into shape, and Alonso is well aware of the stresses of life at Anfield. He continues to play at a great standard for his club, and the Reds could do worse than bring back a former hero.

Alex Richards of the Mirror explained why the Merseyside giants should take Alonso back:

"

To Liverpool fans theirs is a club unlike any other, and Alonso gets that. He got it as a 22-year-old and it hasn't changed. While every transfer has a degree of risk, a free transfer return - wages aside - for Alonso is perhaps as risk free as they come. A player who has been there, seen it, done it, he's not going to buckle under the weight of expectation as many have before.

"

Alonso would give Liverpool a technical presence in the centre of the park, as he successfully did when he first arrived at the club from Spain.

Klopp may purchase a set of pace-driven forwards and midfielders when he gets the chance in January and beyond, and Alonso would provide the balancing point of attacking additions.

Liverpool have quickly turned a corner after the failed tenure of ex-manager Brendan Rodgers, and they look like a team with a purpose once again.

Victories at Chelsea and Manchester City have proved Klopp's squad is already in very good shape, and Liverpool fans will be enthused by the action they've been treated to since the German coach's arrival.

German newspaper Bild (h/t Jamie Sanderson of Metro) said Bayern will not be handing Alonso a new deal, and it places Liverpool as the favourites to capture him, offering Klopp a top-class midfielder at an affordable rate—giving security in the short-term.

Michael Carrick is still impressing in the Premier League for Manchester United at 34, and there is little doubt Alonso could repeat this feat in his defensive midfield function.
