Connor Cook Breaks Michigan State Record for Total Offense
On Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan State Spartans quarterback Connor Cook broke the school's record for total offense, which was previously held by Kirk Cousins, per the Detroit News' Matt Charboneau.
Cook broke the record with an eight-yard completion to Gerald Holmes while the Spartans were leading 34-16 in the fourth quarter. With a win Saturday, Michigan State would clinch a place in the Big Ten Championship Game against the No. 4 Iowa Hawkeyes.
The completion put Cook at 9,008 career yards, four ahead of Cousins' career total. It wasn't the only record he broke Saturday, as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out:
Cook entered the game with 8,765 yards in his career, with 8,535 of them coming through the air, before picking apart the Penn State secondary.
It hasn't been an easy senior season for the fifth-year Spartans signal-caller, who will be one of the top NFL draft prospects in 2016. On Nov. 14 against Maryland, Cook suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the Ohio State game, which Michigan State ended up winning, setting the Spartans up for a Big Ten title game berth.
While school records are wonderful achievements for any college athlete, the possibility of competing for a national championship will overshadow any individual record. A healthy Cook could cement his status as Michigan State's greatest quarterback ever by winning the Big Ten title and more during bowl season.
