Miami Dolphins Week 11 Stock Report

Erik FrenzNov 18, 2015

The Miami Dolphins probably would not have beat the Philadelphia Eagles if Joe Philbin were still their head coach.

Thanks to the toughness instilled in the team by interim head coach Dan Campbell, though, the Dolphins were able to bounce back from a 16-3 first-quarter deficit to win 20-19 in a thriller. This is the second time this season that the Dolphins have overcome a double-digit deficit to win a game.

The Dolphins are a talented football team, but thanks to Campbell's coaching, they are also a mentally tough team. That's why, even at 4-5 with seven games to go, the Dolphins still have a shot to make the playoffs. They don't have much room for error, though, so here's a look at the players who need to continue playing well, and some others who need to step their game up.

Stock Up: Jarvis Landry

1 of 5

The Dolphins don't have a deep threat in their offense right now, but with Jarvis Landry running routes, maybe they don't need one.

Landry has been red hot since Dan Campbell took over as head coach, and Sunday was no different. The shifty slot receiver went off for seven receptions, 52 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles, marking the fourth consecutive game in which Landry has had five or more receptions.

He's also had four touchdowns (one rushing, three receiving) in the past five games, compared to one touchdown (punt return) in the first four games.

Landry is the best skill-position player on the Dolphins roster, and the team should be getting him the ball as much as possible.

Stock Down: Dallas Thomas

2 of 5

The Dolphins offensive line has been one of the team's worst units for years, and that continued on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles with the poor play of guard Dallas Thomas in particular.

The third-year guard yielded seven hurries and one hit, according to Pro Football Focus. He also earned a minus-6.2 grade in the running game, which was by far the worst mark on the team.

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has dealt with suffocating pressure for years, but against the Eagles he faced pressure on half of his dropbacks (20 out of 40) and completed just nine of his 16 throws (56.3 percent) for 59 yards (3.7 yards per attempt) when under pressure.

The Dolphins offensive line must do a better job of protecting Tannehill and opening lanes in the running game. Dallas Thomas is one of the players who has the most work to do in improving his game.

Stock Up: Jay Ajayi

3 of 5

The Dolphins coaching staff has already come out and said that running back Jay Ajayi will be more involved in their offense.

"[Lamar Miller]'s still the starter for us, but I think Ajayi has also earned the right to carry the ball a few more times," head coach Dan Campbell said on Wednesday.

So that went from a whisper to a dull roar in a hurry.

Ajayi has touched the ball just 11 times since returning from the short-term injured reserve, but he has turned those 11 carries into 89 yards (8.1 yards per carry) and is immediately ascending up the depth chart and proving he deserves more carries.

It's up to the coaches to stay committed enough to running the ball, but it's also up to the Dolphins as a team to not fall behind early (as they've done several times this year) and force the coaches to completely abandon the running game. In a perfect environment, though, Ajayi should be getting at least five carries per game.

Stock Down: Kenny Stills

4 of 5

Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills has started four of nine games this year. With 16 receptions for 279 yards and a touchdown, he is tied with three other players for sixth-fewest receptions of any wide receiver with at least four starts.

Sunday against the Eagles was not much different. The veteran pass-catcher hauled in none of the four passes thrown his way, and he even had a painful drop on a deep ball that went straight through his hands.

Stills has the potential to be a big-play receiver for the Dolphins offense, but he is just not finding his groove through the first nine games. Give him some time and maybe he'll work out the kinks, or maybe he benefited from having a quarterback like Drew Brees when Stills was a member of the New Orleans Saints for the first two years of his career.

Stock Up: Derrick Shelby

5 of 5

The Dolphins lost All-Pro defensive end Cameron Wake for the season, and up until this past week, his replacement, Derrick Shelby, has been relatively quiet.

On Sunday against the Eagles, Shelby tied for the team lead with seven total quarterback pressures (six hurries, one sack) and had a game-altering sack-fumble of Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford to help the Dolphins stay in the game.

Shelby missed two tackles, but he played stout in the running game otherwise and had five "stopped" runs that were deemed unsuccessful plays for the offense based on down and distance.

Shelby is getting some help from Ndamukong Suh and Olivier Vernon also creating pressure, but his ability to get after the quarterback is helping the defensive line remain a productive unit in Wake's absence.
