Gasol Active vs. Pistons
Wednesday, Dec. 9
Head coach Dave Joerger announced Gasol is available and will start against the Detroit Pistons, according to Fox Sports Southeast's Rob Fischer.
Gasol Essential Piece to Grizzlies Puzzle
A serious injury to Gasol would be a devastating setback for the Grizzlies, so it is encouraging it was only a sprain. He is a two-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA team member who took home the 2012-13 NBA Defensive Player of the Year as one of the best overall centers in the league.
What’s more, Gasol averaged double-figure points in each of his first seven seasons and is a solid rebounder and rim protector who anchors the Grizzlies defense. He is also a versatile offensive force who can score from the low blocks, hit from mid-range and operate in pick-and-pop situations and pass from the high post.
Memphis would likely turn to Zach Randolph (6'9", 260 lbs) during Gasol’s absence as another two-time All-Star who can control the low-block offense with strength and impressive finishing ability around the rim.
The Grizzlies also have JaMychal Green as an option at power forward, especially since he scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field off the bench Tuesday.
Gasol is a major reason why Memphis could challenge the top teams in the Western Conference in the playoffs, and it needs him fully healthy for the stretch run.
