Breeders' Cup 2015 Results: Replay Video, Highlights and Recap for Classic Race

Tyler DumaOct 31, 2015

Saturday, the racing world said goodbye to a champion and a legend in American Pharoah. The three-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile had a fitting end to his racing career with a victory in the biggest race in the United States—the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Unsurprisingly, Pharoah was by far the best Saturday, posting a 6 1/2-length victory over a field boasting multiple Grade 1 winning colts, including Tonalist, Keen Ice, Frosted and Honor Code.

With his win in the $5 million race, Pharoah collected the eighth Grade 1 victory of his short career and the sixth in his three-year-old season.

Recap and Highlights

Pharoah was predictably outstanding in his Breeders' Cup victory.

The three-year-old superstar got out to an early lead and set a mild pace, working through a quarter-mile in 23.99 seconds. Effinex sat just two lengths back off the Triple Crown winner, as the group worked through a half-mile in 47.50.

This was about as close as anyone got to Pharoah. Two Lengths.

The incredible part of Pharoah's win is he was never pushed. The pace was very lightly contested, and at no point in the race did the Bob Baffert-trained colt ever see a horse anywhere near his peripheral.

Pharoah led the field through three quarters in 1:11.21, and although Tonalist, Frosted and Effinex all attempted to make a run at Pharoah, he and his rider, Victor Espinoza, kept their composure and continued to chug away, logging a mile in 1:35.47.

Halfway through the final turn was where Pharoah began to do his damage. After sustaining the efforts of the three challengers mentioned just above, Espinoza opened up the reins and allowed AP to run free.

Coming into the stretch run, Pharoah opened up a four-length lead and began to pull away like a true champion.

Even if you knew it was coming, it's hard not to get chills from watching Pharoah just trounce a loaded Classic field. All told, Pharoah ran through the 1 1/4 mile race in just a tick over two minutes—2:00.07 to be exact—and set a new track record for winning margin after defeating his nearest competitor, Effinex, by a whopping 6 1/2 lengths.

After an incredible run, the Ahmed-Zayat-owned colt went out the only way he knew how, a champion.
