Joe Staley and Vernon Davis Reportedly Clashed over Colin Kaepernick
Debate about the performance of Colin Kaepernick has apparently spilled over from fans into the San Francisco 49ers locker room. Tight end Vernon Davis and offensive tackle Joe Staley were involved in an altercation that may have turned physical after Davis reportedly confronted his quarterback.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the incident happened during a team meeting following the 49ers' Week 4 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Jim Tomsula called the meeting in hopes of rectifying the team's offensive struggles and "asked the players to continue to discuss their differences after he left the room." Per Maiocco, through multiple sources, Davis called out Kaepernick, and Staley defended his QB, leading to a "heated" argument.

Davis denied having argued with Staley, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News:
"“No, I didn’t call Kap out,” Davis said at his locker Thursday. “I don’t know where you got that from. I didn’t call Kap out at all.
“It’s not my job or my role, to call Kap out. I let coaches do that. We’re all together. There’s nothing that can separate any of us. We’re inseparable, I would think.
“Me, Kap, Joe are all on the same page. We’re captains, we’re leaders so we have to stay together in order for things to happen.”
"
“I have a great relationship with Vernon,” Kaepernick said, per Maiocco. “We’ve constantly had talks since I started playing. It’s something we both want to do. We both want to win. That’s where some of the frustrations come from. We’re trying to fix the losing streak we’d been on.”
Kyle McLorg of Bay Area Sports Guy first reported the news.
Anonymous reports from inside the 49ers locker room are nothing new. They undermined the entire last season of the Jim Harbaugh era, as internal discord between the head coach and general manager Trent Baalke was the NFL's worst-kept secret. Harbaugh's exit was swift following the 2014 regular season, and it's fair to wonder if the influx of rumors is setting up for the departures of Davis and Kaepernick.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported teams believe Davis "could be had" before Tuesday's trade deadline. Given his current irrelevance in the 49ers offense—Davis has just 12 receptions for 170 yards on the season—it might be best for the team to move on now.
Either way, with the 49ers sitting at 2-5 and Kaepernick struggling, don't be surprised if more anonymous reports are leaked throughout the second half of 2015.
