World Gymnastics Championships 2015: Results and Reaction from Tuesday

Rory MarsdenOct 27, 2015

The United States predictably claimed gold in the women's team event at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships on Tuesday in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Americans put on a stunning display to head the scoring by some distance, Simone Biles leading the team in impressive fashion.

China and Great Britain took advantage of Russia's late failings to claim the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Here are the full results from the women's team final:

The U.S. team were heavy favourites to take top spot in Glasgow, not least because of an imperious display in qualifying.

They did not disappoint, producing excellent performances on vault and bars to open up a convincing lead at the halfway stage, per USA Gymnastics:

Aly Raisman, Maggie Nichols and Biles then posted a score of 43.432 on beam.

Biles' routine prompted a 15.200 score and an astonished reaction from USA Today's Nancy Armour:

Team USA's performance in the third rotation effectively guaranteed them the gold medal, but that did not prevent them from a near-perfect finale on the floor despite only needing a 13.545 average.

Russia, second at the halfway stage, had a calamitous final two rotations to allow China and Team GB their opportunities.

As noted by Gymnastike, it was the beam that ruined their chances at the silver medal as China took second spot with one rotation to go:

But it was some issues on floor that knocked them out of the the medals completely.

That is not to take away from a brilliant British performance, though. The local favourites were steady in the first two rotations despite a slight error from Ellie Downie on bars.

They then brought things home in impressive style—Amy Tinkler's floor routine on her 16th birthday a particular highlight, per British Gymnastics:

Lying in fifth heading into the last rotation—behind USA, China, Russia and Japan—the British team produced a brilliant display on the vault to claim their first-ever medal in the world team final.

Claudia Fragapane, Tinkler and Downie were the stars for Great Britain as they claimed bronze in front of an adoring crowd at the SSE Hydro.

It was effectively a forgone conclusion that Team USA would win gold given their quality in recent years, but they produced a magical display to savour.

The battle for the places behind them was absolutely thrilling and has laid down the gauntlet for the other finals to come in the rest of the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships.
