Biggest Takeaways from Jacksonville Jaguars' Week 7 Win
The Jacksonville Jaguars left London with a 34-31 win over the Buffalo Bills but not before giving up a 24-point lead. They reaffirmed that they still have a lot to fix, including "finishing" the game, which they did not do besides scoring with a couple of minutes left.
However, there were some positives from the game that deserve recognition, such as running back T.J. Yeldon's stellar performance. Individual performances and moments made up a lot of Sunday's excitement, and the Jaguars have to be thankful for that.
The talent this team possesses has reared its head throughout the season, but bringing it out consistently has been an issue. While some players will have performances that match or exceed expectations, other players or groups will cancel it out with lackluster showings.
In many ways, the win against the Bills showed that the Jaguars still lack an identity and the cohesiveness to piece together a performance for four quarters. No one can expect exceptional play every snap, but the lack of consistency and identity have remained a problem.
Luckily, the Jaguars have a much-needed bye week to rest and take time to figure out what needs to happen to overcome their difficulties and take the remaining nine games of this season head-on.
Gus Bradley's Job Is Safe
1 of 5
Right as the Bills and the Jaguars were about to kickoff, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport tweeted that Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley is considered safe through this season and the 2016 season.
In all honesty, this kind of stung. Owner Shad Khan has been extremely patient with the Jaguars and Bradley, and taking a slow, understanding approach is something that no owner should be faulted for.
However, the fact that the organization thinks Bradley deserves time without pressure all the way through the 2016 season is baffling. Even with Sunday's win, Bradley is 9-30 as the head coach, and there haven't been a whole lot of signs this season in favor of him or his coaching staff.
This wasn't football-related, but the timing of the news really put a tone on the game. Many thought that this game was supposed to be a crucial point in his job security, but now we've learned that he might not be playing a must-win game for the next two years, no matter the record.
Perhaps Bradley got the win the team needed to progress forward, but it sure didn't seem like it. No matter the job security, the fans are expecting better results, and losing a hopeful, dedicated fanbase through poor play would only serve to harm the franchise.
Telvin Smith Steps Up to Lead Jaguars Defense
2 of 5
Linebacker Telvin Smith has shown immense promise through his first two seasons with the Jaguars, and Sunday was probably his finest performance yet. Smith notched eight solo tackles, two tackles for loss and took an interception off Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel to the end zone.
Smith also totaled three passes defended, showing exactly how good he was in coverage for the Jaguars. His speed is quickly being matched by growing awareness and vision, and that makes him dangerous in a lot of situations.
He's always been an aggressive player, but combining instinct with intelligence resulted in the interception as well as his tackles for loss. On the interception, he instantly saw Manuel's eyes and started veering towards the receiver. Once Manuel threw the ball, all Smith had to do was catch it.
In the tackles for loss, Smith twice snuffed out run plays to the outside, which has become a bit of a feeding ground for him. His quickness and improved awareness have allowed him to pursue and contain runs to his side, and that has been a big contribution to the Jaguars defense.
Smith is still growing as a player, and it'll be interesting how and where he adapts next. He has had no trouble making a name for himself as a young player, but his continued improvement could make Smith one of the most exciting linebackers in the league.
Jaguars Get Sacks from Various Players but Still Lack Lethality
3 of 5
The Jaguars were able to record four sacks against Buffalo, and they all came from different players. That may seem like a respectable amount, but the Jaguars only registered six hurries and five hits on Manuel.
Defensive tackle Abry Jones and defensive ends Tyson Alualu and Andre Branch all reached the quarterback, as did corner Aaron Colvin, who registered his third sack of the season. Colvin also forced a fumble, which was picked up by defensive end Chris Clemons, who took it all the way for an incredible score.
The defensive line is still lacking a go-to rusher for most situations, despite having four "Leo" edge-rushers on the roster. Defensive end Ryan Davis leads the group with 2.5 sacks this season.
Colvin having three sacks this season is impressive, and it may be another aspect of his play that we didn't realize at first; him leading the team in sacks is not. All three defensive linemen who earned a sack on Sunday earned their first sack of the season in the seventh game.
It's unreasonable to expect consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks in every series of every game, but the defensive line is still not the force it was expected to be. Hopefully, Sunday's performance and new initiations to the sack sheet will kickstart a struggling line.
T.J. Yeldon Scores First Rushing Touchdown, Shows Progress
4 of 5
Yeldon came into Sunday averaging 3.56 yards per carry, which isn't bad for a rookie. After the dust settled on his 20-carry, 115-yard day, his average jumped up to 3.99. Yeldon averaged 5.8 yards per carry against the Bills, his highest of the season.
Yeldon looked sharp on Sunday, and the offensive line deserves due credit for making that possible. He had no trouble getting space for a few yards on nearly every carry, and that opened up chances for big plays.
Yeldon's tremendous footwork and toughness were on display Sunday, and both were crucial parts to his 28-yard touchdown, the first of his NFL career. After an initial stop, Yeldon finished the run and bounced outside, leaving an open path to the end zone.
It was important for Yeldon to get his first TD of the season, and it will hopefully help him develop a knack for the end zone as he progresses. The Jaguars haven't had a true feature back in a few years, but Yeldon looks to be ready to take that role.
Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns Continue to Shine
5 of 5
Wide receivers Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson have been more than exceptional this season; they've been incredible. The two both showed promise in their rookie years, but the significant step-up this season has been fantastic to watch.
The two were on the receiving end of 151 of Blake Bortles' 182 total yards as well as his two touchdown passes, with Hurns' coming late in the game and for the go-ahead score to win.
They've quickly established themselves as not only viable options, but preferred ones. Even with the addition of star tight end Julius Thomas, the pair have remained Bortles' favorite targets for the past couple of weeks.
Having a pair of talented receivers is something that has eluded the Jaguars since the famed days of Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell, although the two separate pairs have relatively different playing styles.
But it's hard not to feel some excitement that the Jaguars may have acquired another valuable pair of receivers, especially considering the drastic need for good receiving options. There is still more than half the season remaining, but "the Allens" have already made their mark.
