USMNT Watch: Geoff Cameron Leaves with Injury, U17s Crash out of World Cup

Joe TanseyOct 25, 2015

The news around the globe concerning the United States men's national team was not that great this week.

One of the team's top defenders exited his club match on Saturday with an injury, while the U17 squad followed an all-too-familiar trend for the USMNT in recent months.

Despite all the doom and gloom, there was one large bit of good news as the United States was finally announced as the host of the Copa America Centenario in June.

We'll have news on all of those stories and more below in the latest USMNT Watch.

Geoff Cameron Departs Stoke City Match with Injury

Just as he was rounding into solid form for club and country, center back Geoff Cameron was forced out in the ninth minute of Stoke City's match on Saturday with a quad injury

The good news is the injury won't keep Cameron out for long, as he is expected to miss seven to 10 days, according Brian Sciaretta of American Soccer Now:

If the set timeframe holds, Cameron will be ready for the pair of World Cup qualifiers against St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago in November.

Tim Howard and Brad Guzan both ended up on the wrong end of the final score on Saturday, as Howard's Everton fell to Arsenal and Guzan's Aston Villa dropped points at home to Swansea City. On Sunday, Villa sacked boss Tim Sherwood because of the poor string of results to start the season.

DeAndre Yedlin started for Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Down in the Championship, Tim Ream, Danny Williams and Eric Lichaj all started in their normal positions. Jonathan Spector, meanwhile, played 45 minutes at central midfield for Birmingham City before being taken off at the half in their 2-0 defeat to Hull City.

U17s Crash out of World Cup in Disappointing Fashion

Things were looking up for the USMNT U17s early on Friday against Chile in their final Group A match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, but they rapidly went south as the hosts scored four unanswered goals to win 4-1.

The defeat knocked the Yanks out of the competition, in which they also lost to Nigeria and drew with Croatia. Brandon Vazquez scored twice for the team and Christian Pulisic showed plenty of positive signs in regard to his development.

Failing to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament was the latest awful result suffered by the USMNT after the loss by the senior team in the CONCACAF Cup and the U23s' failure to secure a spot in the Olympics.

For Jurgen Klinsmann, the technical director, the last few months have been ruthless in terms of results. Hope is starting to dwindle about a possible turnaround across all age groups.

Wood, Morales Start in Germany

Bobby Wood continued to earn consistent playing time with Union Berlin in the 2.Bundesliga, as he started in their 2-0 loss to Paderborn on Friday.

Alfredo Morales picked up another start for Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga on Saturday, but the newly promoted side fell to Hertha Berlin 1-0.

Timmy Chandler made a late cameo for Eintracht Frankfurt in their 2-1 win over Hannover on Saturday.

Jerome Kiesewetter, who might have a chance at earning a senior team call-up soon, played 77 minutes for Stuttgart II on Saturday.

Copa America Centenario Becomes Official

After months of uncertainty, U.S. Soccer announced on Friday the Copa America Centenario tournament will be held in the United States.

The tournament, which was in doubt because of the ongoing FIFA scandal, will be played from June 3 to June 26 and feature 16 teams. Six teams from CONCACAF will join the 10 CONMEBOL representatives in the competition.

Playing in the historic event is a huge deal for the USMNT, as they will get a chance to test themselves against some of the best teams in the world, which is a needed plus after failing to reach the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The competition should also allow Klinsmann to test some of his younger players as Clint Dempsey, Kyle Beckerman, Jermaine Jones and others begin to age.

News and Notes

Jonathan Bornstein and Edgar Castillo earned starts for their respective sides in Liga MX on Saturday. Joe Corona came on as a substitute for Veracruz, while Jose Torres and Ventura Alvarado did not feature.

Ethan Horvath earned a win with Molde in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, as the Norwegian side beat Celtic 3-1.

Alejandro Bedoya remained on the sidelines recovering from the virus that kept him out of the CONCACAF Cup. He's missed Nantes' last two Ligue 1 matches.
