World Gymnastics Championships 2015: Results and Reaction from Saturday
The United States continued its dominance in women's gymnastics Saturday as Team USA took the top spot in team qualifying, while Americans Simone Biles and Gabrielle Douglas were No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, in all-around qualifying at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships.
Team USA, led by Biles, Douglas, Aly Raisman and others, finished with a comfortable lead of more than five points over Russia at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.
Here is a look at the eight teams that qualified for the finals, with full results available at 2015WorldGymnastics.com:
| 1 | USA | 236.611 |
| 2 | Russia | 231.437 |
| 3 | Great Britain | 227.162 |
| 4 | China | 225.127 |
| 5 | Italy | 224.452 |
| 6 | Japan | 223.863 |
| 7 | Canada | 222.780 |
| 8 | Netherlands | 222.354 |
Former Olympian Chellsie Memmel was among those who were impressed with Team USA's showing Saturday:
Another former Team USA star, Jordyn Wieber, was proud of her countrywomen as well:
The Americans are the reigning world and Olympic champions, and Raisman made it clear how important repeating that feat is to her when asked about it prior to the competition, according to ESPNW's Laurie Bern:
"The last time I was at worlds, the U.S. team won the gold medal, and I qualified for the all-around final and took a bronze on floor. It would be great to repeat those results, but I have to keep reminding myself to take things one step at a time. Defending our world team title and qualifying for Rio is our first priority. If qualifications and the team final go well, I'll revisit my goals.
"
While the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the floor exercise and bronze medalist in balance beam is well on her way to accomplishing her team goal, her personal goals took a hit Saturday.
Raisman finished fifth in all-around qualifying, behind the reigning world champion in Biles, Switzerland's Giulia Steingruber, the reigning Olympic champion in Douglas and Canada's Elisabeth Black. But that was not enough to qualify due to a rule limiting two athletes per country in each competition.
A fall on the uneven bars left Raisman in 67th place in that discipline and was the main culprit for her finish in the all-around. She was also just 17th on the balance beam and sixth in floor exercise, which prompted her to be apologetic for her performance afterward:
Raisman also called Saturday's showing one of the worst of her career, according to Rachel Axon of USA Today:
"That's what just drives me crazy. I'm disgusted but it's still good to be [fifth] in the world but it just doesn't ... I didn't make beam or floor finals so it's just ... crazy. It's probably one of the worst meets I've ever had in my life and I'm still [fifth] in the world so that's pretty ridiculous.
"
Here is a rundown of the top 10 performers in the all-round event, paced by Biles:
| 1 | Simone Biles | USA | 61.598 |
| 2 | Giulia Steingruber | Switzerland | 57.640 |
| 3 | Gabrielle Douglas | USA | 57.516 |
| 4 | Elisabeth Black | Canada | 57.299 |
| 5 | Aly Raisman | USA | 56.798 |
| 6 | Lieke Wevers | Netherlands | 56.733 |
| 7 | Seda Tutkhalian | Russia | 56.599 |
| 8 | Amy Tinkler | Great Britain | 56.466 |
| 9 | Ruby Harrold | Great Britain | 56.398 |
| 10 | Mai Murakami | Japan | 56.366 |
Biles and Douglas entered the day as the co-favorites, and while Steingruber crashed the party by virtue of a fantastic vault, there is no question that Biles is the gymnast to beat at this point. The defending all-around world champ was excellent in all disciplines, especially vault, floor exercise and balance beam, as she took first place in all of them.
Here is a video of her nearly perfect vault, which was one of many highlights for her on the day:
Biles also took eighth in the uneven bars, which was good enough to give her a substantial advantage over the field entering the finals in the all-around. After she finished every event Saturday, she gave a shoutout to those who were cheering her on:
Douglas has some work to do in order to catch up and couple her Olympic gold with a world championship gold in the all-around, but she will have a chance after outlasting Raisman.
While Douglas is happy to be in the final, she made it clear that she wasn't cheering for her teammate to fail either, per Will Graves of the Associated Press:
Aside from the all-around and team qualifying, the apparatus finalists were determined as well. Biles led the way in that regard, but she wasn't the only gymnast who shined.
Russia dominated the uneven bars, with Daria Spiridonova and Viktoria Komova taking the top two spots, while Team USA's Madison Kocian qualified third.
The Americans had four of the top eight finishers in the floor exercise, but it was Margaret Nichols who outdid both Raisman and Douglas to take third and qualify for the finals of the event along with Biles.
Full results for every apparatus are available at 2015WorldGymnastics.com.
Saturday was a day of both triumphs and tribulations for the Americans, but they largely stood out above the rest of the field and have a legitimate chance to take gold in every event aside from the uneven bars.
Qualifying is only the beginning, though, which means Team USA will have to keep up its level of intensity in order to hold off tough competitors from other top nations like Russia, Great Britain and China.
