Overview
This series has had plenty of ups and downs—for the teams and individual players. With one ODI left to go—and the series at stake—teams have one final chance to find their mojo before the Test series begins.
For South Africa, that might be a bit more difficult. They lost JP Duminy through injury before the fourth ODI and looked a lopsided outfit in that match, opting for an extra bowler rather than an extra batsman.
Dean Elgar was called up to replace Duminy in the side, but he probably arrived too late to be ready to play a game. He should have adjusted by now, though, and will be a welcome addition to the team.
South Africa’s batting has had flashes of brilliance throughout the series, most notably AB de Villiers in the fourth ODI, but they have not excelled as a unit. If they are hoping for a win in the series decider, they need their top order to spark while De Villiers offers a leg up lower down the order.
Both sides’ bowling units have been impressive, but South Africa’s spinners have let them down in controlling the game and squeezing the run rate. India's record at the Wankhede Stadium is decent with 10 wins out of 16 matches. South Africa have played three ODIs here and never won, so the pressure is all on the visitors.
Key players
India
Axar Patel has had an incredible series with the ball, taking five wickets in three matches with an economy rate of 4.48. His ability to strangle the run rate will be very important for India.
South Africa
After being dropped against Bangladesh a few months ago, Quinton de Kock seems to have recovered some of his form. He's one of just two South Africans to hit a century on this tour, and his role at the top of the order is crucial to help South Africa set a platform.
