David Stockton Waived by Kings: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
The Sacramento Kings waived former Gonzaga Bulldogs guard David Stockton on Thursday, according to Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee.
Stockton, the son of former Utah Jazz star and NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, scored four points on 1-of-7 shooting with five rebounds and four assists in three preseason games, according to CSNBayArea.com.
Despite being cut, Stockton's professional basketball days may not be behind him. James Ham of CSNBayArea.com reported Stockton could sign with the NBA Development League's Reno Bighorns. Stockton may have another option as well, according to Ham:
If Stockton stays in the United States, it would be his second stint with the Bighorns.
The 5'11'', 165-pound guard signed a 10-day contract (per the Sacramento Bee) with the Kings toward the end of the 2014-15 season and averaged 2.7 points and 3.0 assists in three games, but one has to wonder whether Stockton's bloodline is playing a role in his getting a shot at the NBA. He never averaged more than 7.4 points per game in four years at Gonzaga and finished his collegiate career by dishing out a modest 3.1 assists per game.
Per ESPN.com, Stockton did average 20.1 points, 9.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Bighorns last year. There is some promise, but the D-League is different than the NBA.
Sacramento is at the roster maximum of 15 players, so Stockton is unlikely to come back to the Kings this year unless they find themselves in desperate need of depth at the guard position.
