Quincy Enunwa Suspended: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerOct 19, 2015

The New York Jets will be without wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for the next four games, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, after the NFL suspended him as a result of his arrest on domestic violence charges on Aug. 31, 2014.

The charges were dismissed in October 2014 after Enunwa's girlfriend decided to drop her claim against him.

According to Jane McManus of ESPN.com, the NFL lessened Enunwa's suspension from six games—which is the standard reprimand for players and coaches after a first domestic violence charge—to four games in part because of "Enunwa's cooperation and remorse."

Jets head coach Todd Bowles is a bit perplexed as to why the league handed down its punishment over a year after the original incident took place, per Brian Costello of the New York Post. However, Bowles added he and the Jets organization "respect the decision and we're going to move forward," per the team's Twitter account.

“We support and respect the NFL’s decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa," the Jets said in a statement."The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help.”

Enunwa has caught eight passes for 94 yards so far this year and is the lowest-rated wideout on the Jets, according to Pro Football Focus. His absence shouldn't have a marked impact on New York's passing game.

Joe Caporoso of Turn On the Jets hit on a pertinent point regarding another Jets player who, like Enunwa, could face severe consequences down the line for an incident that happened long ago:

The NFL suspended Sheldon Richardson for four games after he violated the league's substance-abuse policy, but it has yet to punish him after his July arrest. Police in Missouri clocked Richardson at 143 mph, and when they pulled him over, they found a semi-automatic handgun in his car.

If the league's handling of Enunwa is any indicator, the Jets could potentially be without Richardson for a stretch of games at any point between now and the middle of the 2016 season.
