Entering the final round, Brendan Steele is the leader of the Frys.com Open after shooting a three-under Saturday that has him at 14 under overall for the tournament.
Steele's best round came Thursday, when he shot a nine-under, setting him up nicely for a pair of consistent rounds that have left him at the top of the leaderboard.
A busy front nine on which he birdied three times and bogeyed once made way for an easier back nine, where he parred all but one hole—which he birdied.
He is treading in uncharted territory, as PGA Tour Media pointed out:
While he has the outright lead, Steele has plenty of company nipping at his heels. Tied for second place at 13 under, Andrew Loupe and Kevin Na used big days to shoot up in the standings.
Na shot eight under par on the day with a clean round. With six birdies, his highlight of the day came on No. 16, where he pulled off an eagle. He birdied the hole before, which the PGA Tour showed:
Loupe was even better, shooting a nine-under Saturday and racking off 10 birdies on the day. He started his day with five birdies in a row and rattled off four straight from Nos. 13 through 17.
The PGA Tour took a look at his last birdie of the day at No. 17:
Beneath the top three golfers are eight players who are tied for fourth place at 12 under overall.
With such a crowded leaderboard vying for first place, one mistake could completely alter the standings. Steele needs to play a near-perfect round if he wants to come away from this tournament with a win. If not, another golfer will be ready to take his spot at the top.
