Donnie Nietes vs. Juan Alejo: Winner, Scorecard and Reaction

Nate LoopOct 17, 2015

In his debut match in the United States, Donnie "Ahas" Nietes cruised to a 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Mexico's Juan "Pinky" Alejo on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

ABS-CBN Sports shared the judges' scorecards:

Nietes (37-1-4, 21 KOs) retained his WBO light flyweight title in the process and extended his streak as the Philippines' longest-reigning champion in boxing history.

Already a wildly popular fighter in his homeland, Nietes made his first foray into attracting a wider audience overseas. With Manny Pacquiao potentially retiring in 2016, there is room for one of the best active pound-for-pound boxers to take up his mantle as the Philippines' top draw.

ABS-CBN video journalist Steve Angeles passed along a few shots of the action:

ABS-CBN's T.J. Manotoc noted Nietes was as sharp as his nickname suggests in the bout:

While he was successful against Alejo (21-4, 13 KOs), the Mexican challenger's anonymous status probably won't do much to move the needle for Nietes. Despite an impressive record, Alejo was ranked just 24th in the junior flyweight division by BoxRec and came into the bout without having fought or beaten anyone of regard.

If you put all of Saturday's top boxing matches on one card, Nietes would have been low on the list for some. Most of the boxing world's attention focused on the opposite coast of the United States, where middleweight star Gennady Golovkin fought and defeated David Lemieux at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There was also Lamont Peterson's win over Felix Diaz, a fight that was nationally televised on NBC earlier in the day.

Interestingly enough, the Golovkin-Lemieux undercard saw another Filipino fighter, Brian Viloria, lose by technical knockout to Roman Gonzalez, a flyweight champ and possible future opponent for the 33-year-old Nietes. The Filipino champ has already expressed interest and confidence in fighting the Nicaraguan boxer.

“Yes I can beat him,” he said, per Rappler.com's Ryan Songalia. “If that fight will come my way I will train double and study the way he fights.”

After the bout, ABS-CBN Sports passed along Nietes' thoughts on that potential scrap:

Gonzalez is Ring Magazine's top pound-for-pound fighter following Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s retirement. Nietes sits at No. 1 in his division but is outside of the magazine's top 10 overall. Already past 30 years old, Nietes might feel pressure to go after Gonzalez right away.

He hasn't been able to secure many top-shelf fights in his current division. Of his last four opponents, only Francisco Rodriguez Jr. is in BoxRec's current top 10.

There isn't much time for Nietes to dawdle if he wants to become a widely recognized star of a sport that is now without a signature fighter.

Nietes has dominated everyone who has come across his path in recent years. With Viloria losing and Pacquiao fading, there is room for Nietes to carve out a space as a top draw in boxing's lighter ranks.
