Jose Mourinho Fined, Given Suspended 1-Match Ban by FA After Referee Comments

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been fined £50,000 and handed a suspended one-match stadium ban after admitting a breach of the Football Association rules regarding post-match comments to the media—a punishment he branded a "disgrace."

Rob Harris of the Associated Press reported the manager has lost his appeal against the sanctions:

The FA released a statement via its official website on Oct. 14 confirming Mourinho had been charged with misconduct following the 3-1 home defeat to Southampton on Oct. 3:

It was alleged his remarks constituted improper conduct in that they alleged and/or implied bias on the part of a match official or match officials and/or brought the game into disrepute.

Mr. Mourinho's suspended stadium ban will be immediately invoked should he be found by an Independent Regulatory Commission to have committed a further breach of FA Rule E3 for any comment or statement to or through the media before [Oct. 13, 2016].

According to the Telegraph, Mourinho gave his reaction at the launch of his new book, saying £50,000 "is an absolute disgrace." He added that "the possibility of getting a stadium ban is also something absolutely astonishing."

The Special One is renowned as an unabashed figure when confronting the media, and his comments made in the wake of that defeat were particularly incendiary.

Despite the fact it was victors Southampton who looked as though they had more viable missed penalty calls than the Blues, Mourinho criticised referee Robert Madley for failing to award his team a spot-kick, per BBC Sport:

He was afraid to give it like everyone else is afraid to give it.

Why? Because there is always a question mark from you [the media] and always a critic so we are always punished.

The penalty in this game is more than crucial because my team, at the moment, the first negative thing that happens...they collapse.

After that, the team lost even more confidence. Mentally, psychologically, the team is unbelievably down.

If the Football Association wants to punish me they can. They don't punish other managers.

"

It's the second time in as many meetings against Southampton that Mourinho has incurred the FA's wrath, having been fined £25,000 in January for comments made following a 1-1 draw with the Saints.

However, the punishment is still short of the £60,000 fine former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was hit with for head-butting Hull City midfielder David Meyler in March 2014, per Sky Sports.

Mourinho remains in the spotlight after a poor start to the season, and the FA's decision to uphold his punishment doesn't make things any easier.
