Overview
The T20 series ended with a washout, which is a rare occurrence in India. That brought a bit of a halt to South Africa’s momentum, but the ODI series brings with it new faces and fresh energy.
Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel will add some oomph to a bowling lineup that has done an impressive job in sub-continental conditions.
It presents the selectors with an interesting conundrum. With a tough Test series against India looming and another one against England around the corner, South Africa might be tempted to stick with their second-string bowling squad to preserve their senior men.
On the batting front, not much will change. Quinton de Kock is likely to return to international action, while Hashim Amla is on the brink of reaching the 6,000-run mark in ODIs.
For India, the picture is a little different. They lost some momentum during the T20s and now need to regroup.
Their squad, too, is not vastly different from the T20 outfit, and it will be up to the experienced players— the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma—to lead from the front.
Kanpur last hosted an ODI in 2013, and there has never been a total of 300 scored here. Fielding first here was preferred in the early days, but in the last 15 years, teams have done a mix of both with varying success.
It is unfamiliar territory for both teams, and if the weather plays along, it should be a good day out.
Key players
India
Shikhar Dhawan is India's leading run scorer in ODIs this year with 619 runs in 15 ODIs at an average of 41.26. India’s lineup is packed full of talented players for him to partner with, too.
South Africa
Hashim Amla is South Africa’s zen and forms a key role in setting a foundation at the top of the order. He will be key in negating India’s spin factor and making sure South Africa keep building partnerships to launch a latter-over attack.
