Friday Recap
A slow but steady start to the day saw Kjeldsen card pars in his first six holes.
The Dane then suffered a setback with a disappointing bogey at the 16th, but he immediately redeemed himself as he picked the shot back up on the next hole.
It was on the back nine where Kjeldsen really shone, as he carded birdies at the first, third, fifth and sixth, a bogey at the second proving to be the only blemish.
His chip-in from a bunker on the third was a particular highlight, per the European Tour's official Twitter feed:
The golfer himself also picked it as the standout moment in his round, according to the European Tour's official website:
"I got off to a little bit of a slow start, I played pretty well but I didn't make the putts. Then I three-putted 16, got it back nicely on 17 and then again—nice birdie on one, bad bogey on two—and then I hit a bad second shot on three into the bunker.
I focus a lot on the sound when the club hits the sand and straight away I felt like it had a lovely sound to the shot and I just managed to get up on the hill and see it disappear. Nice feeling.
"
As noted by the Press Association's golf correspondent Phil Casey, his efforts in the latter half of his round earned him a two-shot lead on the field:
Thursday's leader Fitzpatrick endured a difficult start to his round, but he rallied late on to ensure he maintained a share of the lead going into the weekend.
Birdies at the 10th and the 15th were immediately cancelled out by dropping shots on the proceeding hole, and a third bogey at the first left him on six-under overall.
The Englishman responded well, though, and was revitalised by this magnificent effort at the third:
Two more birdies in the last three holes saw the 21-year-old pull level with Kjeldsen and salvage the round:
Per the European Tour's official website, he said: "It was pretty tough out there today for me. I didn't feel like I hit it my best so it was nice to score well coming in and shoot 69 to stay at the top of the leaderboard which is always nice."
Bland and Aphibarnrat were among the most impressive performers at the top.
The Englishman kicked off with two consecutive bogeys, but he responded in some style as he bagged five birdies and an eagle on the way to carding four-under. A bogey at the 13th was the only error in an otherwise impeccable 16 holes, but nevertheless, Bland was pleased with his performance:
Aphibarnrat hit six birdies and two bogeys as he equalled the score, and both sit just one shot off the lead after two consistent performances.
Fitzpatrick continues to showcase his talents, but his inexperience could see him slip down the rankings as the business end of the tournament approaches, with the likes of Kjeldsen and Shane Lowry so close behind.
That said, the youngster showed great resilience in turning his day around after a disappointing start, and that could just give him a chance of a memorable victory on Sunday.
