Rangers vs. Blue Jays ALDS Game 1: Live Score and Instant Reaction

John LundOct 8, 2015

FINAL SCORE: RANGERS 5 - 3 Blue Jays

The Texas Rangers managed to steal one in Toronto and used a pair of two-run innings to defeat the Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon, 5-3.

Texas took the early momentum in the top of the third with two runs off David Price. Rougned Odor singled and advanced to second before scoring on a single from Delino DeShields, who later came around to score on a lined single from Adrian Beltre.

Beltre hurt his back on the swing, however, and was removed from the game. No word yet on if he can play in Game 2.

Robinson Chirinos added some insurance with a two-run home run to left field that also scored Odor to extend the lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Not to be outdone, Odor added a solo shot in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-3.

It was another disappointing postseason performance for Price, who has now lost six games in October. He entered the game on 11 day's rest and allowed five runs on five hits with five strikeouts, two walks and two hit batsmen in seven innings. He's now lost each of his six postseason starts and has a 5.23 ERA.

The Jays finally got to Yovani Gallardo in the bottom of the fourth with some small ball. After Ben Revere singled and Josh Donaldson walked, Revere moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a slow roller to third base by Edwin Encarnacion that Hanser Alberto, Beltre's replacement, couldn't come up with.

In the fifth, Toronto cut into the lead again, as Russell Martin doubled and came around to score on a double from Pillar. Jose Bautista then added his first postseason home run in the following inning with a blast to left center off new pitcher Keone Kela to cut the lead to one.

Donaldson had to leave the game after getting a knee to the head while breaking up a double play earlier in the contest. He cleared concussion protocol but will be re-evaluated Friday morning. Bautista also left the game in the ninth after tweaking his hamstring in his at-bat in the eighth.

Gallardo pitched great and overcame some struggles once the Jays began batting through the order. He retired the first nine batters, then allowed four hits, including two doubles, and one walk the next time through the order.

But Toronto scored just twice in the five innings.

The Rangers bullpen then did its job, sans Bautista's home run. After that, the Jays went down in order in the seventh and eighth and couldn't rally in the ninth.

Though the Rangers came in with a hot middle of the lineup, it was the Nos. 8, 9 and 1 hitters who did almost all of the damage. Those hitters went 4-for-10 with a double, two home runs and four RBI. Texas' No. 2 through 7 hitters went a combined 1-for-21 with seven strikeouts. The lone hit was Beltre's.

With another early-afternoon start (12:30 p.m. ET) for Game 2, all three injured players have a tough turnaround ahead of them to try to get back in the lineup.

Much like the Jays threw out their trade-deadline ace Thursday, the Rangers will do the same in Game 2 when Cole Hamels takes the hill. In 12 starts with Texas, Hamels is 7-1 with a 3.66 ERA. The Rangers have won 11 of his 12 starts.

With their backs against the wall, the Jays will look to 24-year-old Marcus Stroman for the equalizer. After missing almost all of the season with a torn ACL, Stroman is 4-0 in four starts with a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings.

Texas will look to get some production from the middle of its lineup while the Jays need a strong pitching performance and key at-bats to tie this series heading to Arlington. Hamels is more than familiar with the postseason, while Stroman will surely benefit from the home crowd. Expect the Rogers Centre to be electric once again.
