Mesut Ozil Discusses Arsenal's Premier League Title Hopes, Bayern Munich, More

Gianni VerschuerenOct 7, 2015

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil believes the Gunners can win the Premier League title if the squad is saved from major injuries, and the Germany international maintains his team can get a result against red-hot Bayern Munich in their upcoming Champions League doubleheader.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild (h/t Daily Mail's Richard Arrowsmith), Ozil complimented the level of his team-mates and stated the Premier League title is the club's primary ambition: "We have a great team with a lot of world-class players. Our goal is to win the Premier League title. I think we can achieve it this season if we do not get any major injuries. But the season is still long."

Arsenal currently sit in second place in the Premier League standings, two points behind league leaders Manchester City and level with Manchester United. The Gunners waltzed past United in their last Premier League match, playing arguably their best 90 minutes of the season on their way to a 3-0 win.

The match stood in stark contrast to the pedestrian outing against Olympiacos, which saw Arsenal lose their second consecutive Champions League match. The Gunners already have their backs against the wall, and a strong showing is needed against Bayern. Ozil thinks the Gunners can pull it off if they can hit the level they showed against the Red Devils:

"

It is true that there is a lot of pressure on us in the Champions League. We can beat Bayern, though, if we play at the same level as against Manchester United. I was a bit surprised to see Bayern beat Dortmund 5-1. Bayern's results show that they are in great form.

We have a lot of respect for Bayern, but we are not afraid of them. We are playing at home and we know how to score goals and be successful against Bayern. Of course, it will not be easy, but we have the potential to beat any team.

"

The Bavarians have started the season in incredible fashion, recording eight consecutive wins in the Bundesliga. The defending champions already hold a seven-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, whom they defeated 5-1 in their last outing. In their last three domestic matches, they've scored an absurd 13 goals, per WhoScored.com.

Robert Lewandowski is in the form of his life, highlighted by his incredible five-goal showing against Wolfsburg, scoring all five in just nine minutes:

This statistic from WhoScored.com should put fear in the heart of any defender:

Beating Bayern Munich will be a stiff task for the Gunners, but after the losses against Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb, Arsene Wenger's men don't have a choice. If they come out of the doubleheader with anything less than three points, there's a good chance one of the other two Group F teams will have built a lead big enough to make sure Arsenal can no longer qualify for the next round.

The Gunners did just produce their finest display of the season, however, cruising past Manchester United thanks to a lightning start to the match. Alexis Sanchez impressed with two goals, and the Chilean is finally starting to find his form again. But Ozil was the biggest star, once again showing his incredible passing range.

With Chelsea suffering a dreadful start to the season and Manchester City cooling down in recent weeks, Arsenal certainly look like valid title contenders, and if they can continue their fine form, there's no reason to believe they won't challenge. TV personality Piers Morgan was blown away:

The title has to be Arsenal's top goal in 2015-16, but qualification for the next round of the Champions League is also a must. An early exit at the hands of Olympiacos or Zagreb would be beyond embarrassing, and it's a fate Wenger's men have to avoid at all costs.

In order to do so, Arsenal will have to do something that seems almost impossible right now―beat Bayern, at least once. Ozil believes it can be done, and based on what we saw Arsenal do against United, he should. But the Bavarians aren't the Red Devils, and with the way Lewandowski is playing, a single lapse of concentration could spell disaster for the Gunners.
