Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Jurgen Klopp's January Plans

Rory MarsdenOct 7, 2015

Jurgen Klopp does not believe he will need to make major adjustments to the Liverpool squad in January if, as seems likely, he is appointed as the new manager at Anfield in the coming days.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager is set to be unveiled as the new Liverpool boss on Friday on a three-year deal, per Dominic King in the Daily Mail.

Klopp's first opportunity to tinker with his new squad will be in the January transfer window, but David Maddock in the Mirror reports that the German is not looking to overhaul the current group: "He has told the Reds' owners he has already run the rule over the squad and has seen enough to feel he wouldn't require too many new faces to be added in the January transfer window."

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have seemingly moved quickly to replace the ousted Rodgers, who only left the managerial role at Liverpool on Sunday.

After a positive start to his Anfield reign—which saw Liverpool almost win the Premier League title in 2013-14—the Reds have declined of late.

Last season they finished sixth in the league, and they currently lie 10th in the English top flight after picking up 12 points from their opening eight games.

The most disappointing aspect of Rodgers' time in charge was the ineffectiveness of the transfer strategy.

Despite selling Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling for vast sums of money, Rodgers was unable to bring in adequate replacements.

The Northern Irish manager cannot be held fully responsible considering he was working within the constraints of a transfer committee, per James Pearce in the Liverpool Echo.

But his inability to mould an effective squad despite vast sums of money being spent on players is eventually what cost him his job.

Per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe, Klopp has the raw materials at Liverpool to produce results:

This is likely why the 48-year-old is reportedly not planning to be too active in January. Liverpool, though, do reportedly have their eyes on Paris Saint-Germain's Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Per Luke Gardener in the Daily Star, the Reds have already made contact with PSG over a potential January purchase of the Argentinian.

The 30-year-old winger has been only a bit-part player for the French champions this season and would likely be interested in a new challenge at Liverpool.

While Lavezzi would provide an experienced alternative to underperforming summer attacking recruits like Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino, he would hardly be a marquee early signing for Klopp.

However, the inopportune timing of Klopp's likely mid-season appointment means any major rebuild of the Liverpool squad under the German will not take place until next summer.
