Hopkins Eyeing January Retirement
Tuesday, Oct. 6
Speaking to BoxingScene.com this week, B-Hop revealed he's targeting a January 30 date against Abraham in what will be his last fight "win, lose or draw," per Andreas Hale of Yahoo:
"I’m looking to go somewhere in January, I guess before the Super Bowl at the Barclays Center, which has set aside a date for me and do my last one. My thing is I want to fight someone who is credible, someone you have to take honest. Arthur Abraham has a gritty-type of style and I want it to be promoted as the last one.
"
It's not the first time fans have heard Hopkins talk about hanging up his gloves, but this most recent statement appears to carry with it a more candid belief from The Alien that this will be the end of his career.
Hopkins also spoke to Fight Hub this week and professed that "Abraham wants it," as do both fighters' promoters, leaving few obstacles in regards to what could actually stop this fixture:
Abraham is unbeaten in his last seven fights across a two-year span and currently holds the WBO super middleweight belt, but he has never boxed at light heavyweight.
The 35-year-old is 43-4 with 29 knockouts to his name, and the chance to go up against such an esteemed boxing figure in Hopkins may understandably be seen as an opportunity for Abraham.
Hopkins, on the other hand, hasn't made a drop close to middleweight since beating Kelly Pavlik in 2008 and will have just turned 51 years of age (January 15, 2016) if his hope to take on Abraham materialises.
