Weirdest Sports Homages of 2015 so Far

Laura DeptaOct 6, 2015

Superfans are great. They are passionate, loyal and willing to go above and beyond to show support for their teams.

That said, fans have paid homage to their teams in some weird ways over the past year or so. We've had old favorites like corn mazes and haircuts, and we've also seen some newcomers—a galaxy, for instance. All are a little unusual, but all represent the deep love fans feel for their teams.

To be clear, "weird" should be taken in the best context. Own your weird, superfans!

Haircuts

The salt-art guy, aka Rob the Original also does hair. Should they so desire, fans can come to him to have spot-on renditions of their favorite players buzzed into their hair. Recent inspirations have included Dez Bryant, Floyd Mayweather and Tim Duncan.

Pizza

The food-as-a-tribute thing is so common it's almost lost its weirdness—almost.

A Chicago-area pizza place, Punky's Pizza and Pasta, sold pizzas resembling the Chicago Blackhawks logo on game days, according to Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard. And that's not even as crazy as the David Beckham pizza.

Tattoos

A haircut is one thing, but to have a sports figure permanently etched onto your body seems a bit extreme.

One fan has five tattoos of Cristiano Ronaldo on his back. Five! And for some reason, ever-optimistic fans continue to get preemptive championship tattoos, which obviously don't always work out.

A Pizza-Themed Tattoo

Well this is a new one. Buffalo Bills fan @wasteyfacejesus loves his team, and he loves Pizza. And here we are.

Cakes

5 of 12

Cakes are a little less unusual simply because pictures are often recreated on cakes. Really, a lot of cakes are like art in food form. Then again, a cake in the shape of Hulk Hogan is pretty odd odd, or John Calipari, or you know, Nick Saban riding an elephant.

Corn Mazes

6 of 12

Remember the scene in Field of Dreams when everyone thinks Ray Kinsella is crazy for plowing under his corn?

Isn't that similar to all the folks who create sports-related corn mazes? This happens all the time, but recently, the world was treated to a Chicago Blackhawks championship maze in Illinois as well as a Rex Ryan maze by some Buffalo Bills fans in New York.

It's worth nothing, though, that as it turned out, Ray Kinsella was not crazy.

Team-Themed Car

Weird might not be the right word to describe a Seattle Seahawks custom Ferrari. Excessive? Impractical? Proof of undying mega-fanship? Whatever it is, it is definitely unusual.

Team-Themed House

8 of 12

Man, those 12s are really not kidding around. If a custom car reads extreme, what about a custom house?

According to Jasmine Watkins of Sporting News, one fan residing in Arizona made over his house to look like a Seattle Seahawks shrine ahead of Super Bowl XLIX. It may have been out there, but the commitment, effort and attention to detail are all admirable.

Kris Bryant Song

If you haven't heard the Kris Bryant song, inspired by the Chicago Cubs third baseman of the same name, give it a listen, courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times.

One fan created a rendition of Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" to honor the young star's call-up from the minors in April. The quality is meh, but the effort is outstanding.

Stadium Replicas

10 of 12

Fans have long been building stadium replicas. There was the Lego model of Ralph Wilson Stadium, the kid-sized Fenway Park (built one-third to scale) and now, there is Griller Park.

According to Mike Oz of Big League Stew, Milwaukee Brewers fan Matt Tyler created a grill that looks exactly like Miller Park.

This is the definition of weird in a good way. That thing is awesome.

Artificial Eyes

11 of 12

This has to take the cake for most unique sports homage this year (or possibly ever).

According to Joshua Gauntt of Fox WBRC in Birmingham, Alabama, alumna Mary Farr lost her left eye in an accident and now uses an artificial one. Before the upcoming college football season, Farr had a red eye made with "BAMA" etched onto it.

A Galaxy

12 of 12

Nope, this is more unusual. In June, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had a galaxy named after him. Yes.

According to Dennis Overbye of the New York Times, astronomers discovered the galaxy in June and dubbed it "CR7."

Soccer fans will recognize the moniker as Ronaldo's brand. Lead astronomer, Dr. David Sobral of the University of Lisbon in Portugal, confirmed the star helped inspire the name. Dr. Sobral added the galaxy's name also stands for "Cosmos Redshift 7," but still.
