Recap
Taylor has a tendency to be either very good or very bad at the World Grand Prix—he won the tournament 11 times but also got knocked out in the first round on four occasions—but even at his best, he would have struggled to beat Vincent van der Voort on Monday.
The Dutchman was as calm and composed as ever despite the Power's dominance in averages, taking the win in two short sets.
The tone was set early when Taylor came within a whisker of completing a nine-darter in the second leg, per Sky Sports Darts:
Van der Voort didn't let Taylor's explosive scoring knock his confidence, however, making full use of every advantage he could find. The Dutch Destroyer averaged well over 90 and hit on 33 percent of his doubles on the checkout, and more importantly, he got the upper hand in the two deciders, beating the favoured Taylor 2-0.
As shared by Live Darts, he understood just how big of an upset it was:
Gary Anderson had it easy against John Henderson, outscoring his compatriot by an average of more than 10 and cruising to a 2-0 win. To Henderson's credit, he finished with a perfect record on the checkout; Anderson gave him just one chance, however.
Robert Thornton also didn't struggle in his match against Daryl Gurney, easily winning 2-0.
Wade suffered a shock exit at the hands of Suljovic, one of 2014's top breakout stars on the PDC circuit, losing 2-1. The Machine appeared to be cruising to an easy win after dominating the first set, but Suljovic turned the match on its head with some sublime darts, taking three consecutive legs in the second set and continuing his momentum in the third.
As shared by the PDC's official Twitter account, his checkout percentage was a ridiculous 70 percent:
Wade looked excellent in the first set, finding his opening doubles with ease and putting up solid averages to keep his Austrian opponent at bay. However, things started to go wrong for The Machine up one leg in the second set.
Suddenly, his doubles were off, and Suljovic sensed his opportunity. The veteran started producing one wonderful checkout after the other, including back-to-back finishes of 148 and 129 that shocked the crowd.
Darts pro Wayne Marble couldn't believe it:
Earlier on Monday, Jenkins produced a similar performance to get past King, finishing with a checkout percentage well over 50 percent to control their first-round match. The King struggled with consistency last season, and those struggles appear to have carried over, as he just didn't look himself on Monday.
Justin Pipe felt almost remorseful after coming back from a first-set defeat at the hands of good friend Steve Beaton, taking to Twitter to explain how tough his first-round match was:
"So wanted to win tonight it made the 1st set hard. Hard to beat yer best pal but had to do it. That's for you @D_Dublu_racing
— Justin Pipe (@Blewboy71) October 5, 2015"
Beaton swept Pipe in the first set but struggled the rest of the way, finishing with an average under 76 and a checkout percentage of just over 21 percent.
Meanwhile, Simon Whitlock did what he was expected to do, beating Andrew Gilding in the first match of the night. The Wizard surrendered just a single leg and appears to be in excellent form coming into the tournament.
Whitlock will like his chances moving forward, particularly with so many top players getting eliminated early, but defending champion Michael van Gerwen remains the obvious favourite to win his third World Grand Prix title. Mighty Mike will face Belgium's Kim Huybrechts on Tuesday, while Whitlock will take on Suljovic on Wednesday.
