Shahadat Hossain Surrenders, Jailed Amid Allegations of Torturing Housemaid
Bangladesh bowler Shahadat Hossain has been jailed and is set to face charges that he tortured an 11-year-old housemaid after turning himself in to the authorities.
According to BBC Sport, Hossain has had a bail petition rejected, and his wife, who will also face charges, has been arrested as well.
The bowler hadn’t been seen since allegations emerged about him and his wife on September 6. The 29-year-old has been suspended from playing cricket until the charges are cleared.

The pair deny the allegations, and Hossain’s lawyer, Kazi Nazibullah Hiru, told AFP (h/t BBC Sport), "We appealed to the court that Shahadat should be released on bail for the greater interest of the country. We pleaded that he is not guilty as he was not present on the day the girl was allegedly beaten.”
According to BBC Sport, Hossain had initially gone to speak with the police on September 6, claiming the maid had gone missing. Authorities were apparently able to locate the girl later that day, and she then revealed she had suffered “torture and abuse” from the pair.
“Doctors say the girl had extensive injuries indicating abuse, including a broken leg and a black eye,” says the report. “When the police went to the couple's house to question them, neither were there.”

Hossain is one of Bangladesh’s most high-profile cricketers and last featured for the Tigers in a Test match against Pakistan back in May. During that encounter, the bowler twisted his knee and has not played since.
The 29-year-old famously took figures of 5-98 against England in May 2010, becoming the first bowler from his nation to grab a five-wicket haul at Lord’s. In 36 Tests, he has taken 70 wickets, and in one-day internationals, 47 wickets in 79 games.
