Michigan Football: How Wolverines' Top Commits Performed This Weekend

Tyler DonohueOct 4, 2015

The Michigan Wolverines continued to gain momentum under head coach Jim Harbaugh on Saturday with a 28-0 shutout victory over the Maryland Terrapins, their first win against a Big Ten Conference opponent.

The program's future also appears strong, based on the latest slew of performances by high school prospects who have committed to Michigan.

Quarterback Brandon Peters warranted national attention when he pledged to the Wolverines in April, and the Indiana native continues to provide a promising preview of his potential. The 6'5", 205-pound passer helped Avon High School extend its win streak to four straight Friday night.

Peters threw a pair of first-quarter touchdowns against Westfield High School, setting the stage for a 35-20 victory. A dominant start limited him to just 15 total pass attempts, per Matthew VanTryon of the Indianapolis Star.

The Elite 11 finalist threw 23 touchdowns during Avon's first six games of his senior season. Peters compiled just 21 scoring strikes as a junior.

He admitted the hiring of Harbaugh, a former Wolverines quarterback and longtime NFL veteran, helped make an impact in his recruitment.

"It plays a pretty big factor," Peters told Bleacher Report in April. "You have a head coach who has experienced it all at the position and can help you progress through your career. It was definitely a big emphasis with Michigan."

Fellow Wolverines offensive commitment Brad Hawkins, a 4-star wide receiver from southern New Jersey, rushed for a touchdown Friday night against Willingboro High School, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Hawkins, a dynamic 6'1", 202-pound playmaker, pledged to Michigan shortly after Camden High School teammate and 4-star defensive end Ron Johnson announced his decision at attend college in Ann Arbor. The close friends instantly became key components of a 2016 Wolverines recruiting class that's ninth in the nation in 247Sports' composite rankings.

Some college teams targeted Hawkins, a two-way star on the basketball court and football field, as a possible defensive back prospect. However, the goal was to find an ideal fit at receiver, and that's exactly where he's expected to begin his Michigan career.

His past two seasons featured a combined 96 catches for 1,553 yards and 25 touchdowns, per MaxPreps. Hawkins added 86 tackles, four interceptions and 270 rushing yards during that stretch.

Peters and Hawkins highlight an impressive offensive recruiting class. Electric in-state running back Chris Evans, New Jersey wide receiver Ahmir Mitchell and four 4-star offensive linemen join the duo in Michigan's 2016 class.
