AFL Grand Final 2015: Score and Twitter Reaction for Hawthorn vs. West Coast

Christopher SimpsonOct 2, 2015

Hawthorn stunned West Coast Eagles 16.11 (107) to 8.13 (61) in the 2015 AFL Grand Final on Saturday to win their third consecutive premiership title.

Cyril Rioli earned the Norm Smith Medal after scoring a brace and making four assists as he dictated Hawthorn's stunning attacking play for much of the proceedings, though Jack Gunston could easily have won it himself as he scored four goals.

The Hawks were far more clinical than their opponents throughout and took almost every chance presented to them, while the Eagles missed countless opportunities with some poor kicking.

Luke Hodge started for Hawthorn as did Gunston, who returned to the side after suffering an injury in the defeat to West Coast in September. As for the Eagles, they named an unchanged side from the one that beat North Melbourne in their last outing.

West Coast drew first blood through Luke Shuey from a tight angle less than two minutes into the electric first quarter, but Hawthorn hit back immediately through Rioli.

Ben McEvoy soon pulled his side ahead, grabbing a goal of his own in a one-on-one with Dom Sheed after an impressive mark from Ryan Schoenmakers' kick.

The irrepressible Rioli continued to make things happen for his side and added a third for the Hawks while the profligate Eagles missed a great opportunity to reduce the arrears as Jack Darling hooked a simple kick well wide of the posts.

Hawthorn punished some loose defensive play with a fourth goal in the first quarter after Darling disastrously gave the ball away. Despite his side's best efforts to clear, Grant Birchall was on hand to make the lengthy kick, per #AFLGF:

The Eagles' wastefulness reduced them to settling for behinds, and Hawthorn compounded their worries by grabbing a fifth goal with virtually the last kick of the quarter through Brad Hill to take a 5.0 (30) to 1.5 (11) lead.

Four more unanswered goals for Hawthorn kicked off the second quarter as Hodge kicked a magnificent effort before Gunston grabbed a brace and Smith got in on the action as well. Hodge's narrow strike was particularly memorable:

Josh Hill and Elliot Yeo pulled two goals back to salvage a modicum of pride before half-time, but the Eagles still trailed by 31 points.

Fellow pros Pearce Hanley and Mitch Hallahan were full of praise for the Hawks' clinical play:

Darling grabbed a third consecutive goal for the Eagles in the third quarter but shortly after fumbled a simple mark while Mark LeCras also missed an easy chance to convert.

Schoenmakers bagged the Hawks' 10th goal of the match, but West Coast's Mark Hutchings continued to give his side some vain hope when he made an excellent snap under pressure.

The impeccable Gunston quickly dashed those hopes, though, as he hit two more goals in two minutes thanks to James Frawley and yet more outstanding play from Rioli before Isaac Smith picked the ball up in the pocket and cutely kicked home:

Matt Suckling rounded out another ruthless quarter for the Hawks as he got on the scoresheet within seconds of coming on as a substitute for David Hale.

Jarryd Roughead and a second for Smith piled yet more misery on the Eagles in the final quarter thanks to two more assists from Rioli, and though LeCras and a very late brace from Jeremy McGovern made the scoreline somewhat more respectable, Hawthorn were deserved and comfortable winners at the final siren.

CBS Sports' Sam Vecenie led the praise for Rioli after his stunning display:

Hawthorn continue to go from strength to strength and have now won three flags in a row.

After such a clinical and composed display on Saturday, their incredible achievement is unsurprising. If they can maintain their ruthless kicking, they'll stand an excellent chance of making it four consecutive titles in 2016.
