Steve McManaman Rips Liverpool, Claims Reds Need to Demolish Clubs Like Sion

Joseph ZuckerOct 1, 2015

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman was highly critical of the Reds' performance in their 1-1 draw with FC Sion in the Europa League on Thursday night.

During his post-match analysis on BT Sport, the former Liverpool midfielder said the club "should be demolishing teams like (Sion)":

Adam Lallana got Liverpool off to a great start with a goal in the fourth minute. Then Ebenezer Assifuah equalized for Sion in the 18th minute. Both Lallana and Divock Origi had chances to put the Reds back into the lead but couldn't find the back of the net.

Although McManaman didn't go out of his way to call out manager Brendan Rodgers, how a club plays is a reflection of its manager. Plus, Rodgers is already on shaky ground following the Reds' poor start to the Premier League.

In what will surely go over poorly with supporters, he told BT Sport after the match the club is essentially in rebuilding mode:

Bleacher Report UK joked the 42-year-old was likely sweating bullets in anticipation he'd have to speak publicly about the draw:

Many cited poor finishing as the biggest reason for the result. According to UEFA.com, Liverpool had 19 total shots but just eight on target. At least it represented an improvement over Liverpool's shootout victory over Carlisle in the Capital One Cup, when it registered 58 total shots and 16 shots on goal.

Through two Europa League matches, the Reds are second in Group B on goals scored, having taken two points.

Rodgers will ultimately be judged on the club's Premier League results, but a group-stage exit for Liverpool could be the final nail in his coffin—if he still has the job on Dec. 10.
