Manchester United Transfer News: Cristiano Ronaldo Leaves Real Madrid Door Ajar

Matt JonesOct 1, 2015

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has left the door open for a potential move away from the club in the near future, insisting he is unsure what the future holds for him, with Manchester United reportedly interested.

The Portuguese forward made a rare appearance to speak to the media after Los Blancos’ clash with Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday, a game in which he equalled Raul’s club record of 323 goals by scoring a brace. When quizzed on his future, Ronaldo pulled out a classic footballer's cliche.

“I'm happy at Real Madrid,” said the 30-year-old, per Marca. “I want to win more silverware and I feel great, but as I've said millions of times before, you never know what the future holds. I'm really happy here right now. I'm a professional. I always try to give it my all and I'm comfortable at Real Madrid”

Speculation continues to rage about Ronaldo’s long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu, with reports linking French champions Paris Saint-Germain and the Red Devils with a possible £90 million bid, according to the Mirror's David McDonnell.

But as Ronaldo notes himself, he seems content in Madrid. The forward has scored 10 goals already this season despite some criticism, and under the tutelage of Rafa Benitez, Los Blancos seem set for a strong campaign both in Europe and La Liga.

As we can see here courtesy of AS English, Ronaldo remains very proud of his goalscoring record too, which surpassed the 500 mark with his brace against Malmo on Wednesday:

Once he does break Raul’s record, there’s little else for the Portuguese to prove in the Spanish capital. He’s helped Real to win the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his time at the club after all, and you do wonder whether or not a new challenge may appeal to the Portuguese at this stage of his career.

Manchester United, as was evident by the following post on their Twitter feed, clearly still have Ronaldo in mind, too:

Ronaldo may be 31 next summer, but having kept himself in impeccable shape throughout his career, he seems to have many more years left in him at the very top level. So, even if United were to pay a massive amount of money to bring him back to Old Trafford, the Portuguese could be the catalyst for this football club getting back among the elite of European football.

Still, it’s money many would rather see invested back into the club, especially with United scarcely fielding products from their own youth system these days.

In the short-term, splurging on Ronaldo would make sense and appeal to the romantic instinct in all football fans. But looking at matters long-term, the Red Devils could be much more sensible with that kind of money.
