Presidents Cup 2015: Singles Matchups We'd Love to See

Ben AlberstadtOct 1, 2015

The Ryder Cup's little brother, the Presidents Cup, may lack some of the fire of its older sibling, but hey, it's still entertaining. And if you're an American: be excited! This is a competition, unlike the Ryder Cup, we actually have a chance of winning. The United States' squad has won eight of the 10 competitions.

Captains Jay Haas and Nick Price will tap 12 players to represent the United States and, well, countries outside of the U.S. and the United Kingdom (as the International side does) during the Sunday singles portion of the competition.

Who will Price and Haas send out? Who knows!

Here are seven matchups we'd like to see, though.

Jordan Spieth vs. Jason Day

1 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Best

Why we want to see it

This would be the tournament's premier matchup and a real heavyweight fight. The No. 1 and No. 3 golfers in the world going head to head: It's what anyone who likes golf wants to see.

Jordan Spieth won in his most recent start (the Tour Championship) and Jason Day won two starts ago (BMW Championship). The pair have combined for 10 wins—including three of the four majors—this season. Great players at the top of their games, who wouldn't want to see Spieth vs. Day?

Rickie Fowler vs. Steven Bowditch

2 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Brows

Why we want to see it

Here's a fun showdown: The two golfers with the most impressive eyebrows battling it out for what we'll call the Brow Cup. But really, Steven Bowditch is widely admired for his impressive above-eye ornamentation (there was even a Twitter account devoted to his furry forehead covers).

And Rickie Fowler, while not as widely recognized for the size and density of his brows, is no slouch in that department. And may the best brows win.

Rickie Fowler vs. Danny Lee

3 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Prank Warriors

Why we want to see it

Danny Lee and Rickie Fowler have been going back and forth in a prank war that has largely consisted of the duo defacing one another's vehicles and messing around with the other party's parking space.

It's unlikely the pranking will continue in South Korea, but what better way to settle things than an on-course contest? And hey, maybe someone will bring a rubber snake

Phil Mickelson vs. Adam Scott

4 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Big Guns That Are Firing Blanks

Why we want to see it

Adam Scott. Phil Mickelson. Big-name golfers on the PGA Tour in the past decade-plus. Neither golfer has won in the past two years. Neither golfer made it to the Tour Championship, and they had just six top-10 finishes between them this year.

They do, however, have 16 Presidents Cup appearances between them. It'll be fun to watch the pair battle it out, even if neither is at the top of his game at the moment.

Jordan Spieth vs. Thongchai Jaidee

5 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Recent Winners

Why we want to see it

In his most recent start, Jordan Spieth won the Tour Championship. And in his most recent start, Thongchai Jaidee won the European Open on the (you guessed it) European Tour his last time out. What's not to love about watching two guys fresh off victories duking it out?

Jim Furyk vs. Louis Oosthuizen

6 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Walking Wounded

Why we want to see it

Assuming both golfers are able to tee it up in South Korea, major champions Jim Furyk and Louis Oosthuizen will certainly be less than 100 percent. Furyk is nursing a wrist injury that saw him pull out of both the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. Louis Oosthuizen, for his part, withdrew from the Tour Championship with a hamstring injury.

Which golfer can dig deep and capture a point for his team? We'd like to find out.

Dustin Johnson vs. Anirban Lahiri

7 of 7

We call it: The Battle of the Bombers

Why we want to see it

These guys can really pound it. Dustin Johnson, of course, led the tour in driving distance, averaging more than 317 yards per tee-box bomb this season. Anirban Lahiri, for his part, won the PGA Championship's long-drive contest.

It'd be fun to watch this pair uncork a few in South Korea. And hey, who doesn't love dingers
