John Cena vs. Seth Rollins: Winner, Reaction from 2015 WWE Live from MSG
In his second rematch for the United States Championship, WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins once again fell to John Cena Saturday night in a steel-cage match at the Madison Square Garden WWE Network special in New York City.
Rollins looked to have the match won as he was descending from the top of the cage. Then, Kane's music hit, and The Big Red Monster approached ringside. That forced Rollins back into the ring, and his Frog Splash missed the mark, per WWE:
That allowed Cena to pick up the pin after hitting an Attitude Adjustment.
SB Nation's Cageside Seats wasn't entirely enthused with the nature of the finish:
Adding insult to injury, Kane delivered both a Chokeslam and Tombstone Piledriver to the reigning world champ:
Rollins defeated Cena for the U.S. title in a champion vs. champion match at SummerSlam with help from Jon Stewart. That made him the first concurrent WWE world heavyweight and United States champ in WWE history, but that distinction was short-lived.
The former architect of The Shield was forced to compete in two matches at Night of Champions with one of them being a United States Championship bout against Cena. Rollins lost that match and the title, although he went on to retain the world title by defeating Sting.
Kane gave Rollins an opportunity to win back the United States Championship on the ensuing episode of Raw, but he couldn't get the job done against the leader of the Cenation.
Despite that setback, Rollins was still pleased with himself as he continued to carry the company's top prize, according to WWE Universe on Twitter:
Even so, he received another crack at the United States Championship at a special WWE live event from MSG. To make things even more interesting, the matchup was contested within the confines of a steel cage.
The two Superstars are no strangers to that environment, as Rollins defeated Cena in a cage match last year on Raw due largely to interference from J&J Security.
The Authority's handpicked face of the company didn't have the same support system Saturday, and it cost him as Cena defeated him for the third time in a row and kept his United States Championship in the process.
Although Finn Balor beat Kevin Owens for the NXT Championship at WWE's July 4 Beast in the East live special, few expected a title change in this particular match due to the circumstances surrounding both Superstars.
Rollins has the world title and a potential Hell in a Cell match with Kane to worry about, while Cena can focus on continuing to elevate the United States Championship.
Saturday's result certainly wasn't great for Rollins in terms of trying to overcome his poor booking as WWE world heavyweight champion to this point, but it is tough to argue against the notion that Cena is the best option to hold the U.S. title at the moment.
