Parsons Comments on Return to Practice
Thursday, Oct. 22
ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported Parsons returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since undergoing surgery.
"Besides being exhausted and tired, I felt fine. A little bit rusty," Parsons said, per McMahon. "Obviously it’s going to take some time to get back to 100 percent, with making reads and timing and everything like that, but it’s very positive that I’m able to get through a whole practice without any pain or pulling me out or anything."
Parsons Had "Minor Hybrid" Procedure on Knee
Sunday, Sept. 27
MacMahon reported on the procedure and added details of the surgery:
"Sources told ESPN.com that the operation, which was performed by team physician T.O. Souryal, included a bone marrow transplant from Parsons' right hip to help regenerate the cartilage damage from late last season that caused him to miss all but one game of the playoffs.
"
The placement of the cartilage damage was in the "best possible spot" because it did not affect a weight-bearing area of Parsons' knee, which allowed him to avoid microfracture surgery, per MacMahon.
On Sept. 21, MacMahon reported Parsons, center JaVale McGee and guard Wesley Matthews will all be worked into action "gradually" when the Mavs start camp.
Parsons, 26, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in May to fix cartilage damage. He missed 10 of Dallas' last 11 games, including four of five in its first-round loss to the Houston Rockets. Despite experiencing some pain, Parsons attempted to play in Game 1 of the series, scoring 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting before being shut down.
Earl K. Sneed of the Mavericks' official website reported Parsons is still planning to be ready by opening night.
Parsons Essential Piece to Mavericks Roster
Given their wild offseason—most notably DeAndre Jordan's last-minute switcheroo—the Mavs will need all hands on deck next season. They're among the likeliest Western Conference teams to fall into the lottery in 2015-16, having lost Tyson Chandler during the Jordan fiasco and being unable to make a huge splash in free agency.
Matthews, who signed an eyebrow-raising $70 million deal, is currently recovering from a torn Achilles.
With he and Parsons sitting on the shelf, the Mavs will likely spend most of camp without their starting wings on the floor together. It's not exactly an ideal start for a team that's going to need some breaks.
